“There are inescapable kinds of workloads that lend themselves well to the cloud,” Hilwa said—for example, externally facing applications. But migrating an existing legacy application to the cloud involves several considerations that need to subsist evaluated before embarking on such a project.
This summer, Pabst Brewing Co. moved its entire data center from its San Antonio, Texas, office to Rackspace Hosting, using a fuse of the firms’ cloud and managed services. The migration went relatively smoothly, until it came time to high-tail two older applications: Microsoft Dynamics GP, the enterprise resource planning (ERP) system formerly known as distinguished Plains, and Salient Margin Minder, a revenue management tool.
Both applications had been up and running for more than five years, and had undergone many upgrades and patches, explained Stephen Blake, CEO of Virtessential, the Florence, Ky.-based IT integrator that oversaw the migration. Pabst didn’t fill access to the source installation files or ample documentation about configuration changes over the years.
“No one knew what was installed; [the apps] were benevolent of a black box,” Blake said.
Meanwhile, dote most managed service providers, Rackspace was unwilling to provide a service-level agreement (SLA) for poorly understood applications.
“There aren’t too many managed service providers [MSPs] that are flexible enough to say, ‘Sure, we’ll rob your images.’ They don’t want to rob the risk of having to support problems that fill been there for a while,” Blake said.
Instead, MSPs typically coincide to support only applications that are installed fresh, and that are managed using the MSP’s preferred tools.
Virtessential circumvented these problems using application virtualization software from AppZero that extracted the application and its dependencies into a portable “virtual application appliance” package, and then installed each of them on to a fresh operating system image.
“The servers glance dote a fresh build, but they’re not,” Blake said.
The application extraction and migration processes took less an hour, and the resulting builds fill been running without incident on Rackspace since August. Had he not stumbled upon AppZero, Blake said migrating those two applications would fill added three or four weeks to the project.
In the end, migrating legacy applications to the cloud won out for Pabst, but it’s not always so easy.
Enterprises are increasingly large consumers of Software as a Service (SaaS) applications, the classic examples being Salesforce.com for customer relationship management and Workday for payroll services. Now, some internal IT departments are exploring whether it makes sense to supervene suit and re-architect in-house applications as cloud-hosted multi-tenant applications—private SaaS apps, as it were.
As an example, imagine an automobile manufacturer that has created a financing application for individual dealers across the country. That application was written as single-tenant application destined to subsist installed and speed on a dealer’s premises, maintained by a local IT professional. That model is fraught with difficulty, of course, with dealers struggling to troubleshoot and maintain the apps.
What if, instead, that application were re-tooled to speed as a multi-tenant cloud-hosted SaaS app that automobile dealers simply logged in to, while the manufacturer handled upkeep, maintenance and fresh development?
Independent software vendors that fill offered on-premises and SaaS software affirm that the high-tail to multi-tenancy has been distinguished for their business.
“Is multi-tenant the way to go? Yes, because the goal is to optimize maintenance cost,” said Andrei Sergeev, senior vice president at EMAS Pro, which provides enrollment management software for colleges and universities. Simply put, SaaS-based tools are much simpler to install and maintain, for both the provider and the consumer.
SaaS likewise puts advanced capabilities in the hands of users that are otherwise cost-prohibitive, Sergeev said.
After several earlier attempts with on-premises solutions, EMAS Pro recently began offering a SaaS-based tool called Retention Pro that helps colleges identify students who are at risk of dropping out. The service consists of several different modules including Apache Tomcat, a rules engine, and a trade analytics and reporting engine, complete of which are tightly integrated.
“That’s a lot of different components, and if you wanted to speed it on-prem, you would need licenses for complete of those things, which becomes an expensive proposition,” Sergeev said. He said he could imagine many expend cases for private multi-tenant SaaS apps in the enterprise.
Unfortunately, re-architecting a legacy single-tenant application for multi-tenancy is easier said than done.
“It’s a monumental task,” said Brian Hoskins, principal product manager at LANDesk, the systems management software provider that is on a three-year journey to “SaaS-ify” its traditional service desk tools, and that is doing the very for its systems and security management offerings.
Like a lot of legacy on-premises applications, LANDesk was built around a Windows console that makes a lot of direct calls to the application and database layers, Hoskins explained. That just doesn’t work in a SaaS platform, so the company had to rewrite complete those calls to high-tail through Web services.
Softening the Blow
For companies that don’t fill the stomach for that benevolent of evolution project, there are startups dote Apprenda and Corent Technology that pretense they can simplify legacy application migration to multi-tenancy.
Corent Multi-Tenant Server (MTS), for example, can subsist used to transform a single-tenant app to a multi-tenant one, either with shared or separate tenant databases.
Open 4 trade Online (O4BO.com) is based in Hong Kong, and recently used Corent MTS to create a SaaS service that runs on the IBM SmartCloud from a standard catalog of open source trade software, including Openbravo for ERP, Pentaho for trade analytics and SugarCRM. Mike Oliver, the founder of O4BO and likewise a former Corent employee, said conversion times vary, but that he could convert some applications in less than an hour.
“It depends on the application. Some are well-designed, but others fill idiosyncrasies or, frankly, poorly designed code,” Oliver said. Having access to the source code, however, is not a requirement for Corent MTS, Oliver added.
Oliver said he has talked about Corent MTS to a number of enterprise shops that are intrigued by the possibilities. One U.S. health custody consortium, for example, is thinking about using it with its subsidiaries across the U.S. Of particular interest is that the converted application can expend either shared or dedicated databases, which is an distinguished consideration in health care, where regulations vary from state to state.
Likewise, converting in-house applications to multi-tenancy might provide an absorbing way for different groups within an organization—end users, developers, property assurance employees—to gain access to a single application estate, while providing each group with customized views.
No Pain, No Gain?
Shortcuts to migrating legacy applications to the cloud may subsist appealing, but there’s something to subsist said for doing the difficult work of re-architecting for the fresh paradigm, experts said.
A properly architected cloud application has numerous benefits over a traditional on-premises application, namely predictability, resiliency and agility, said Michael Crandell, CEO at RightScale Inc., a cloud management software vendor.
Predictability comes from “templatizing” cloud applications, eliminating many opportunities for human error. “When you gain changes manually, that’s when complete hell breaks loose,” Crandell said.
Agility comes from automation techniques such as auto-scaling and having the option of where you want to speed a workload, and resilience is a result of designing applications around “the understanding that everything fails eventually,” and spreading applications across multiple nodes, regions and even cloud providers.
As difficult as it may be, “we recommend re-architecting any legacy application that people may subsist thinking about moving,” Crandell said. “The notion of taking an individual legacy application, picking it up and plopping on a server in the cloud is not at complete realizing the benefits of the cloud.”

Bismarck, North Dakota — In recent weeks, North Dakota has been in the advice because of the historic and damaging flooding of the Missouri and Souris Rivers. But as the waters subside, it's worth focusing on the state's economy. For at a time of stagnant wages and a high unemployment rate, this vast, lightly populated Peace Garden State is one of the few places in America where jobs are plentiful.
In May nonfarm payroll employment was up 4.3 percent from the year before, and the unassuming state sported a garish 3.2 percent unemployment rate. In several counties, the rate is below one percent. The state jobs office has 15,205 listings, up 64 percent from May 2010. North Dakota, which is one of the smallest states by population (about 670,000) and one of the largest geographically, has .7 unemployed persons for every job opening. In the U.S., the labor obligate participation rate is an anemic 64.2 percent. In North Dakota, it stands at 74 percent.

What accounts for this? A few factors.
There's a full-on oil boom in the western section of the state. The combination of fresh technologies — horizontal drilling, fracking — and high energy prices has led to a boom in drilling and oil production in the Bakken Shale, which lies underneath much of the western half off the state. "It's the largest construction project in the U.S.," says Ron Ness, president of the North Dakota Petroleum Council. A sharp soar in production, from 45.9 million barrels in 200 to 113 million in 2010, has made North Dakota the fourth-largest oil-producing state in the U.S. And there's more to come. Some 173 oil-drilling rigs are now at work in the state, about one-quarter of complete those in the U.S., and Ness projects up to $5 billion on spending on oil- and gas-related infrastructure over the next three to five years.
The state's workforce directly employed in the oil industry has risen from 4,500 in 2005 to about 35,000 today. "On any given Monday, we've got 1,700 job openings directly related to the oil industry," Ness said. But since oil production requires a distinguished deal of support, the boom has created claim for a achieve for workers: truckers, accountants, cooks, HR managers. In Williston, gas stations, convenience stores and McDonald's are offering $12.50 to $15.00 an hour for entry-level jobs.

The Tesoro refinery in nearby Mandan is likewise benefiting from the boom in the west. The refinery, which can churn out 2.5 million gallons (60,000 barrels) of gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel per day, is experiencing an increase in claim for diesel fuel. "So far this year we've hired 25 people," said manager John Berger, a Bismarck native. Tesoro has announced a $35 million expansion that would enable the refinery to increase its capacity by 10,000 barrels per day by next year. That should lead to more construction and production jobs.
But it's not just about oil. North Dakota's prolific agricultural economy that is benefiting from global boom in commodities. Without bragging, state officials will let you know that the state is the largest single producer in the U.S. of fourteen crops, including barley, canola, durum wheat and navy beans. As more people around the world devour — and devour better — North Dakota's farmers are finding fresh markets and plowing funds into apparatus and processing capabilities. "We've seen phenomenal growth in their export markets, triple digit growth in the eventual few years," said John Mittleider, manager of agriculture and energy evolution at the North Dakota Department of Commerce.
In addition, the eastern section of the state, which is home to cities such as Fargo and magnificient Forks, is growing smartly. Officials note that 45 percent of the job openings in the state are in the eastern Red River Valley. Beyond energy — wind farms, coal mining, a fresh power plant under construction in Spiritwood — the state has a small technology sector and a larger health custody one. Microsoft's campus in Fargo is the technology giant's second-largest one outside of its home basis in Redmond, Washington.
It complete adds up to growth. The state's economy has grown 7.1 percent in the past year. And that means claim for labor, which is a challenge in a sparsely populated state whose population has been aging. I visited a Cavendish Farms frozen french fry factory in Jamestown, a town of 15,000 about 100 miles east of Bismarck. (The smell of cooking oil wafts over the farmland. Director of Operations Andrew MacLeod says the plant faces two major challenges to retain up with growing demand: a want of raw potatoes (supply is down this year) and a want of people. "Attracting employees is probably their biggest challenge today," he said. The plant is looking to add about 15 people to its 220-person staff. "It's mostly operating the line and testing the product," MacLeod said. "We're not getting a lot of applicants. If they want to grow and expand, they fill to attract people here."
Of course, the challenge isn't simply a matter of demographics. Many of the positions open are jobs, not careers. And they're difficult ones that, in many instances, don't pay complete that well. The jobs Cavendish are trying to fill are shift work — three 12-hour days on, followed by two days off, paying anywhere from $12 to $17 per hour. Wages are substantially higher in the oil fields. The tolerable wage in the North Dakota oil and gas extraction industry is more than $90,000. And even low-skilled jobs can command high wages: $1,500 per week for cooks or $1,000 per week for housekeepers.
In addition, there's a severe housing shortage in the western section of the state. Officials counsel people seeking jobs not simply to interpret up in North Dakota unless they fill a situation to live lined up. Some companies are dealing with the problem by building man camps. (And, no, these aren't places where you gain lanyards, fish and watch sports on television; they're modular housing made by companies dote Target Logistics).
North Dakota, which exports so much food and energy, is dealing with its labor shortage by importing people. In the oil fields, it's common for workers to near in a few weeks at a time, and exotic students are working fast-food jobs. And in the East, commuters from more densely-populated Minnesota are crossing the border to their jobs. Across the state, employers are casting their rods more deeply into the labor pool, as older and disabled workers are able to find opportunities in North Dakota that may subsist unavailable to them in other states.
North Dakota today is dote a inverse image of the U.S. economy at large. The state's budget is balanced, housing prices are rising and the labor market is tight. A virtuous circle is in play. More economic activity leads to more investment, which leads to more employment, which in turn creates more claim for complete sorts of goods and services. The state has natural resources in abundance, and is prospering by exporting them. But if North Dakota's boom is going to spread into a long era of prosperity, it's going to need to motif out a way to import more human resources.
