newsMicrosoft Updates Blazor, Now developed on Razor add-ons
the brand novel update comes after the dev group separated the client-facet and server-aspect points of the venture, with the latter being renamed ASP.net Core Razor accessories, now a fragment of the .web Core 3.0 effort.
Razor accessories turned into separated out from the customer-side efforts as a result of those ran into some problems, some related to working with the also-experimental WebAssembly task that offers a compilation goal for C# and other higher-order programming languages so they can likewise subsist used for internet development.
at the time, independent Blazor expert Chris Sainty provided extra tips in a post:
The standard fact is that the customer-aspect model depends now not best on WebAssembly but additionally the efforts of the Mono group and their WASM .web runtime. whereas progress is being made extraordinarily instantly or not it's not rather there yet. AOT is not an alternative, there is extremely restrained debugging, performance must subsist more advantageous, download sizes are too huge, and so forth.
The server-facet model offers Microsoft an opportunity to derive Blazor available to individuals almost immediately. And as it runs on first rate historical .net Core or not it's additionally received an exceptional base. it subsist additionally essential to remember that due to the Blazor structure, with its separation of app execution from rendering, any trends made will capitalize both models. So client-facet is not going to derive left behind.
Blazor team lead Daniel Roth supplied an update on that condition in a publish ultimate week asserting Blazor 0.8.0. "As turned into lately announced, server-side Blazor is now delivery as ASP.web Core Razor components in .net Core three.0," he talked about. "we've integrated the Blazor component mannequin into ASP.internet Core three.0 and renamed it to Razor accessories. Blazor 0.8.0 is now constructed on Razor components and makes it possible for you to host Razor accessories within the browser on WebAssembly."
a different novel construction is that Blazor tooling is now included within the 2nd preview of visible Studio 2019.
"up to now to derive tooling aid for Blazor projects you obligatory to deploy the Blazor extension for visible Studio," noted Roth. "starting with visible Studio 2019 Preview 2, tooling support for Razor accessories (and therefore Blazor apps) is already protected without needing to install anything else. The Blazor extension is now most efficacious essential to installation the Blazor project templates in visible Studio."
After noting some .net runtime improvements, intimate issues and information for updating existing initiatives, Roth reviewed Blazor's existing popularity and future.
"This unencumber of Blazor turned into essentially concentrated on first integrating Razor components into ASP.web Core three.0 and then rebuilding Blazor on precise of that," Roth stated. "Going forward, they device to ship Blazor updates with every .net Core three.0 update.
"Blazor, and lead for operating Razor accessories on WebAssembly in the browser, won't ship with .internet Core three.0, however they continue to work in opposition t transport Blazor some later date."
David Ramel is the editor of visual Studio journal.

This covered granting clients huge entry to records, with Payroll as an obvious exception. The advantages to self-service reporting, dashboards, and analytics are so high-quality, I believed, that limiting the capacity to report on commerce data felt enjoy limiting the company’s competencies.

Let’s Build a Global Power GridIllustration: Elias Stein
It is a decades-old dream: a single, vast North American electric grid, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, from Mexico to the Arctic Circle. Such a continent-wide supergrid would let officials transmit the tens of gigawatts of wind-generated power from the noteworthy Plains to cities on both coasts. It would let Pacific Northwest hydropower tide to Chicago and let Texas wind power find its way to Massachusetts, Mississippi, and Montana. The benefits, measured in fiscal and reliability terms, would subsist fantastic. And yet despite many studies and even several attempts to create such a grid, it has never been achieved. The technology and the political will beget been lacking.
In 2016, though, engineers will outcome a major stride in the former. An ambitious project known as Tres Amigas, eight years in the making, is finally getting under way. Eventually it will link the three largest North American grids: the Eastern Interconnection, the Western Interconnection, and the Texas Interconnection, which together cover the lower 48 states plus 8 Canadian provinces. Tres Amigas, located in eastern novel Mexico, where the three grids converge, will subsist a transmission “superstation,” able to transfer up to 20 gigawatts of electricity in almost any direction.
Last November, construction workers began building the first piece of the first angle of the project: a 56-kilometer transmission line to connect three novel wind farms to the superstation site and then to the Blackwater substation, which connects to the Western grid. The 345-kilovolt line is scheduled to subsist electrified by the pause of 2016; Blackwater will likewise subsist upgraded to maneuver the added capacity of up to 500 megawatts of wind power.
The ultimate plan, with an estimated charge tag of US $1.6 billion, is to construct three more lines to substations in Texas, one of which connects to the Texas grid (usually referred to as ERCOT, the acronym for the entity that runs it, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas), and the other two connecting to the Eastern grid.Illustration: Erik Vrielink; Source: North American Reliability Corp. Three Become One: The Tres Amigas superstation, now under construction outside Clovis, N.M., aims to interconnect the three main power grids of North America. Once finished, it will subsist able to rush up to 20 gigawatts of electricity in any direction.
The four sets of transmission lines would converge at Tres Amigas, a 58-square-kilometer site where the company will install high-voltage DC converters for converting AC to DC and back again, plus a modest 5 MW of storage for regulating voltage and frequency. As more partners sign on, additional converters and storage can subsist added. Other plans convene for an electricity-market hub to let traders occupy odds of the differences in electricity prices between regions. On 10 August 2015, for instance, the charge disagreement between ERCOT and the Western grid hit $2,331.54 per megawatt-hour. Capitalizing on such disparities should generally lower rates for customers and stimulate more investment.
Having a high-voltage DC node that connects existing AC networks—a configuration called an HVDC overlay—will outcome the entire grid more stable and responsive to outages and faults, says Tres Amigas CEO Philip G. Harris. “Very large integrated AC systems tend to derive wobbly,” he says. “An HVDC overlay, with its talent to rush a lot of power quickly, will provide a huge reliability enhancement as the electricity grid grows.” Grid operators in Western Europe are already installing or planning a number of these HVDC overlays, he adds. China and India are going even further, installing transmission grids based entirely on HVDC.Matter of Fact A Proto-Supergrid: In 1918, engineer William Spencer Murray proposed a “Superpower Zone” [pdf] of transmission lines and power plants from Washington, D.C., to Boston.
A few links already exist between the main U.S. grids, such as the 200-MW HVDC converter station near Sidney, Neb., which connects the Eastern and Western grids, and the 220-MW HVDC station outside Oklaunion, Texas, which connects the Texas and Eastern grids. But Tres Amigas would bring together complete three grids in one dwelling and at much higher power levels.
Harris came up with the credence for Tres Amigas shortly after he retired as CEO of PJM, a regional grid and wholesale electricity market spanning the Middle Atlantic United States. In 2008, he says, “we drew up their plan, and within a few months they had several million dollars lined up.” Funding dried up with the global fiscal crisis. “The utilities told us they wanted Tres Amigas,” Harris says, but investors accustomed to funding electricity generation or transmission projects “had exertion trying to proper it in a ‘generation or transmission’ box.”
So Harris and his partners did everything except build the superstation: They completed the system assessments, lined up suppliers, leased land for the superstation, secured the rights of way, won regulatory approvals. The original timeline called for completion by 2013 but has been revised repeatedly. ultimate July, in fact, transcend Energy terminated an agreement with Tres Amigas that would beget allowed the superstation to connect to the Eastern grid, citing missed deadlines going back several years. Harris is confident that the agreement will subsist revived once his group updates the interconnection studies to Tres Amigas.
The superstation’s design has likewise been revised. Current plans convene for a more or less traditional power transmission node. But early schematics depicted a much more advanced concept: a superstation laid out in a triangular hub, with an HVDC converter station at each point and underground superconducting DC cables connecting those points.
“We called it the flux capacitor,” Andre Canelhas, a London-based HVDC expert who helped design Tres Amigas, says with a laugh, referring to the three-legged time-travel device from the sci-fi movie Back to the Future. “But in a sense, they are bringing the future to the present, where life is going to derive a lot more piquant as renewables supersede fossil-fuel plants, and we’ll requisite to rush large blocks of power to where generation is suddenly insufficient. A project enjoy Tres Amigas will outcome us evolve the way they requisite to evolve.”
This article originally appeared in print as “The U.S. May Finally derive a Unified Power Grid.”
The steel towers loom in the distance, enjoy shiny toy soldiers arranged in formation. As their boat approaches, the dizzying size of the machines becomes clear. A few minutes later, I’m standing birthright next to one, holding the guardrails and craning my head to occupy it complete in. The boat bucks enjoy a rollercoaster as giant waves crash against the bow. Salty spray lashes my eyeballs. I try not to vomit.
Up close, the machines are not toy-like at all. They are aliens, fifty-story monoliths, each crowned with three enormous, outstretched blades that dazzle in the morning light of this crisp October day. This is America’s first offshore wind farm—a pilot project compared with the vast offshore energy plants in European waters—but still, a hard-won victory.
Anchored to the seafloor twenty miles south of Rhode Island, the five turbines comprising Deepwater Wind’s $300 million obscure Island Wind Farm were erected over the summer. The blades were unlocked several weeks back, and in November, they’ll start generating electricity—30 megawatts (MW) at peak capacity, which is enough to power 17,000 homes.“It’s a typical not-in-my-backyard scenario, and I derive it.”
To the dozens of men and women present on today’s boat tour—executives from Deepwater Wind, Rhode Island state politicians, labor leaders and environmentalists—the wind farm is a sign of things to come.
“It’s going to subsist a stepping stone,” says Walt Trombly, a union representative for the Utility Workers Union of Rhode Island. “The entire country is going to note this.”
If the country likes what it sees, offshore wind could become a cornerstone of America’s bid to wean off fossil fuels. Proponents imagine a future where coastlines from the Carolinas to Maine are lined with thousands of turbines, siphoning energy out of fierce north Atlantic winds and delivering carbon-free power to millions. But not everyone wants that future, and even those who accomplish own the mammoth political, economic, and technological hurdles they requisite to overcome before it arrives.
It’s a aesthetic idea, that the solution to their oil and gas addiction is already at their fingertips. That, with a concerted effort, they could halt climate change by tapping the strong, sustained winds gusting just offshore—an endlessly renewable energy source.
The United States has some of the best offshore wind resources in the world. According to the Department Energy, their “technical offshore potential” is more than 2,000 gigwatts (GW) of power, which translates to double the electricity generated by complete oil, coal, and gas-fired power plants ultimate year. Harnessing that complete potential would occupy a mind-boggling number of turbines, but even a fraction of the energy contained in stiff offshore breezes could fade a long way toward meeting high power demands along densely populated coastlines.
The northeast, with its honest weather and shallow continental shelves, is considered the standard dwelling to derive started.
“The resource is enough to accelerate complete electrical needs for complete coastal states from Massachusetts to North Carolina, and much more,” says Willett Kempton, a professor at the University of Delaware’s School of Marine Science and Policy.Deepwater wind executives, labor leaders and environmentalists speak to reporters on a recent tour of the obscure Island Wind Farm. Photo: Jesse Burke for Gizmodo
Some of the technology they requisite already exists. Thanks to decades of government incentive programs, offshore wind is taking off in Europe, with turbine costs falling snappily as production becomes more industrialized. The offshore wind industry still only accounts for 1.5 percent of the EU’s electricity production, but with three thousand turbines producing 41 terawatt-hours of energy ultimate year, it’s nothing to sniff at.
But in America, offshore wind has made shrimp progress, thanks to high initial costs, requisite of political leadership, and fierce pushback from oceanfront communities who don’t want their views marred by gigantic machines. “It’s a typical not-in-my-backyard scenario, and I derive it,” says Fiore Grassetti, a steel worker who’s helped install dozens of land-based turbines in novel England. “If they’re placed in the wrong location, I agree.”
The first offshore wind project to receive serious vetting in the United States was Cape Wind, a $2.6 billion proposal to build 130 turbines in the Nantucket Sound off Cape Cod. But after receiving state and federal approval back in 2009 and 2010, the project was held hostage for years by an opposition movement spearheaded by a Koch brother and backed by Mitt Romney, among other wealthy and well-connected residents of the Cape. Not only accomplish Cape Wind’s opponents screech the project would intuition significant “visual pollution,” they insist it will raise the cost of electricity rather than lower it. ultimate year, after endless construction delays, Cape Wind lost its power purchase agreements with utility companies. It now seems unlikely the project will ever break ground.Looking up at the steel jacket foundation of an offshore wind turbine. Photo: Jesse Burke for Gizmodo
Perhaps it’s no surprise that the first offshore wind farm to succeed where Cape Wind failed is much smaller, and addresses a much more glaring energy issue. Lacking a direct connection to Rhode Island’s power grid, the 1,000 year-round residents of the sleepy community of obscure Island have, for decades, been forced to singe diesel fuel shipped over from the mainland—a grimy and extremely pricey way of keeping the lights on.
Now that obscure Island is producing power, it’s been integrated into the system. In June, utility company National Grid—which is buying electricity from Deepwater Wind and selling it to customers throughout the state—installed a submarine cable connection linking the wind farm and the nearby community to the mainland. The clean energy obscure Islanders will start buying this month isn’t exactly a bargain: the first year power-price is 24 cents per kilowatt hour, compared with an incurious of 14 cents per kilowatt hour throughout the state. But it’s about 40 percent less than the cost of diesel. The island will likewise subsist avoiding an estimated 40,000 tons of carbon emissions per year, and as an added bonus, that novel submarine cable includes a fiber optic connection. For the first time, residents will beget high-speed internet.
Despite the project’s lucid benefits, not everyone on obscure Island is thrilled about it. Some residents note the wind farm as a political charade, arguing that they are bearing the tribulation of above-market energy costs to enrich private investors, and that the long-term savings will subsist minimal. As with Cape Wind, opponents feel they are trading environmentally-destructive carbon pollution for economically-destructive visual pollution. “No one can wrangle that the loss of [Block Island’s] viewshed will not harm my commerce and any other on the Island,” obscure Island grocery store owner Mary Jane Balser wrote in a note to the obscure Island Times in 2014.“These blades are not dumb, static things. They’re highly tuned, sensitive instruments.”
Matthew Morrissey, Vice President of Massachusetts for Deepwater Wind, says that the controversy over the obscure Island Wind Farm is relatively small. After all, obscure Island’s town council and resident’s association supported the project, as did recent Rhode Island governors, state senators, environmental groups, labor union leaders, and the Obama administration.
“Based on the Cape Wind experience, you’d Think there’d beget been much more pushback,” he says. “I Think overwhelmingly, the citizens appreciated the cutting of the energy cost, the clean nature of their fuel source, and the fiber optic line that gave them snappily internet.”
At this point, only time will show if he’s right.
As their boat weaves between turbines enjoy a guppy amongst whales, I learn that there’s far more to the structures than meets the eye. Designed by GE, obscure Island’s 6 MW, 589 foot-tall Haliade turbines employ novel “direct drive” technology, which replaces the rotating gearbox of older models with a giant, permanent magnet generator. “This reduces mechanical systems inside the machine,” GE Renewable Energy project director Eric Crucerey says. “Fewer pieces stand for less maintenance.” In fact, if complete is running well, nobody will requisite to subsist inside the turbines at all.
The generator is located at the top of the turbine, inside a 400-ton, schoolbus-sized steel house called the nacelle. Directly in front of it lies the rotor hub, which supports three 240 foot-long, fiberglass blades that sweep an district larger than three football fields. The nacelle likewise includes a control room, with computer systems that automatically monitor windspeed and direction and adjust the blades accordingly. “These blades are not dumb, static things,” Morrissey says, sweeping his arm out across the sky. “They’re highly tuned, sensitive instruments.”The top of this Haliade turbine includes a nacelle, where the generator and rotor are housed, a helipad (yellow structure) and three mammoth fiberglass blades. Photo: Jesse Burke for Gizmodo
If the nacelle includes the brain and muscles of the turbine, the tower—an mammoth metal tube built of three 200-ton sections of cast steel—is its backbone. The obscure Island Wind Farm towers were assembled over the summer with the abet of valiant Tern, an aircraft carrier-esque Norwegian vessel that can hoist a gigantic crane hundreds of feet out of the water on four mammoth stilts. The tower, in turn, rests on a 1,500-ton steel jacket foundation, which is anchored to the seafloor 100 feet down.
The turbines are hardy things, designed to endure everyday wind and waves, but likewise powerful storms and even hurricanes. They start spinning to generate power at wind speeds of approximately 6.5 mph, and from there, accelerate merrily along until wind speeds approach that of a strong tropical storm. “When wind speeds derive up to 55 miles per hour, they will feather the blades so they’re not creating friction with the wind,” Morrissey says. With the blades in a safer configuration, Morrissey reckons they can withstand gusts of over 200 mph. “They’re insured, which says something,” he notes.
Under conventional conditions, electricity generated by a turbine is transmitted via cables down the length of the tower to the seafloor, then to a substation located on obscure Island. From there, it’s supplied to the island’s residents and fed back into Rhode Island’s grid. As Catharine Bowes of the National Wildlife Federation points out, one turbine is needed to power obscure Island, even at peak summertime usage (approximately 4 MW). “All of the surplus goes to the mainland,” she says.
How Big that surplus is depends on how snappily the wind blows and how well the machines perform, something Deepwater Wind will subsist monitoring closely. On average, Kempton says, offshore wind operations accelerate at 45 percent capacity. Land-based wind farms in the noteworthy Plains accelerate at about 33 percent capacity, while solar farms achieve capacities of up to 20 percent. In a truly dire situation, a person can sky-dive to the ground of the turbine using rappelling gear attached to the helipad.
While each of the turbines is designed to operate autonomously and can subsist controlled remotely, workers will still beget to enter them periodically for maintenance. Normally, they’ll occupy a boat out, scale ladders attached to the jacket foundation, enter at the ground of the tower, and occupy the long elevator ride to the top. But in a pinch, workers can likewise airlift in and out via a helipad located next to the nacelle.
In a truly dire situation, Crucerey says, a person can sky-dive to the ground of the turbine using rappelling gear attached to the helipad. Similar gear can likewise subsist used to exit the turbine from the tower, should the elevator break down. “People requisite training to subsist inside this machine,” Crucerey says.
Indeed, these safety measures serve as a reminder that, while working on a wind turbine is much safer than working on an explosion-prone oil rig or inside a coal mine, clean energy plants are not risk-free. Human accidents involving wind turbines are underreported, but data compiled by the Caithness Windfarm Information Forum indicates that blade failures depict the biggest danger, followed by turbine fires.
Bracing myself against winds that could fling me into the sea if I let my guard down, I try to imagine making the six hundred-foot leap out of a flaming nacelle. If Deepwater Wind’s reticence to argue emergency evacuations is any indicator, I’m not the only one who finds the scenario a bit frightening.
“Three hundred local tradesmen worked on this wind farm,” says Scott Duhamel, a labor activist from Rhode Island’s building and Construction Trades Council with a thick Boston accent. For him, there’s nothing better than finishing a Big construction project, and the turbines directly ahead of us are—quite literally—as Big as they come. “For years, now, they derive to drive by and say, ‘I built that, I worked on that, I did that.’ The first one in America.”
A swell of pride at having planted the very first wind turbines in US waters was palpable among everyone I spoke with at on the recent obscure Island Wind Farm tour, which was organized by wind energy supporters at the Rhode Island building and Construction Trades Council, the BlueGreen Alliance, and the National Wildlife Federation. So was a sense that the momentum generated here needs to subsist maintained. “We saw a job opportunity,” says Rhode Island senator Joshua Miller, who helped pass legislation that required utilities to buy Deepwater Wind’s electricity. “Whoever was first in this fragment of America was going to set up the platform for [offshore wind] jobs.”
Job creation is often touted as a intuition to support wind energy, even if you don’t supervision about climate change. The reality is that switching to clean power at industrial scales is going to require industrial-scale manufacturing and development, such as we’re starting to note in Europe, where most of the obscure Island Wind Farm’s parts were built. The DOE estimates that an offshore wind industry could support 600,000 novel jobs on US shores by 2050.
To Jimmy Shillitto, Vice President for Local 1-2 Utility in novel York, adaptation to the shifting energy landscape is inevitable. “Times are changing,” he says. “If they don’t derive involved, we’ll die off.”
Rhode Island may subsist first out the gates on offshore wind, but other states are poised to tangle up quickly. Over the summer, Massachusetts passed a bill that will require its utilities to purchase 1,600 MW of electricity from offshore wind farms by 2027. The state of novel York, meanwhile, recently approved a clean Energy Standard that compels novel York City to draw 50 percent of its power from renewable sources by 2030.“Times are changing. If they don’t derive involved, we’ll die off.”
Will the industry tangle on elsewhere in the northeast? According to Kempton, electricity from offshore wind is still about double the market cost, “which is kind of discouraging,” he admits. States that haven’t been interested to pick up some of that cost may subsist waiting for a signal from the feds—say, a tax credit similar to the soon-expiring production tax credit that’s driven the charge of land-based wind power down. Of course, national energy policies depend entirely on who they elect into office this November and in the years to come.
There’s likewise the issue of actually using the seafloor. The Obama administration has designated 11 wind energy areas in the northeast, but many more are needed for offshore wind energy to outcome a dent in their carbon pollution. State governments and energy companies requisite to accomplish environmental vetting, to ensure they aren’t building on top of sensitive habitats, or during key migration periods for birds and whales. These processes occupy time.
Looking further into the future, novel technologies will subsist needed to expand offshore wind into other environments. “On the west coast, the continental shelf gets really abysmal really fast,” says Jose Zayas, director of the DOE’s Wind Energy Technologies Office. “In the Gulf of Mexico, you’ve got to deal with hurricane survivability. The noteworthy Lakes tend to freeze, which is problematic from a structural perspective. The ocean is a complicated environment.”Looking back on America’s first offshore wind farm. Photo: Jesse Burke for Gizmodo
Deepwater Wind, for its part, has already secured rights to another lease area, about 20 miles east of the obscure Island Wind Farm, and is in the process of negotiating a power purchase agreement with Long Island for the first angle of the site’s development, the 90 MW South Fork Wind Farm. If the deal is approved, construction could start as soon as 2019.
As their boat crests around the craggy southeastern shore of obscure Island, past cliffs and harbors dotted with picturesque novel England homes, the turbines retract from view. The blades, which they could note swaying lazily in the walkaway from directly underneath, now emerge suspended in dwelling against the brilliant blue horizon. Looking back on the wind farm from far away, I’m once again reminded what a small step this is compared with what’s needed to transform their grid and forestall uncertain climate change.
But small steps are how novel ideas occupy root. Whether these turbines are the first ambassadors of their valiant novel energy future, or a nosy blip in the history books, I can’t yet say. We’ll beget to note how the winds blow.
Correction: An earlier version of this sage misspelled Dr. Willet Kempton’s denomination and mis-identified him as ‘Wilhelm’ further down in the piece. Eric Crucerey’s denomination was likewise misspelled on two occasions. They sorrow the errors.
It may subsist the lightest electric-assist bicycle of its type anywhere. Weighing less than 15 kilograms, it likewise will subsist EV World's first e-bike offering in more than a decade.
For more than 17 years, I beget written about other people's electric vehicle projects. This time I going to show you about mine.
It's called the K15. Pictured above, at 31.6 lbs. (at least, according to my wife's bathroom scale, which of course, never lies), it is the lightest electric-assist bicycle of its type anywhere. I thought EV World readers would find it piquant how it came to subsist and what my plans are for it.
EV World actually came into existence because of an electric bicycle. In the summer of 1997, while visiting my local bank, I picked up an faded copy of commerce Week magazine and came across a two-page advertisement for the Warrior electric bicycle, a collaboration between Dr. Malcolm Currie and Malcolm Bricklin. Currie was the former head of Hughes Electronics and Bricklin, of course, is a serial automotive entrepreneur.
Intrigued, I wrote down the company URL and headed for my local library where they had an ISDN connection: at home, I was still using a 28.8 dial up at the time. I would spend the next pair hours learning about the world of electric vehicles, especially the exciting rollout of EVs in California. That drop I decided to launch EV World and attended my first Electric Vehicle Symposium in Orlando, Florida. There I got to drive my first Toyota Prius, introduced in Japan only 12 days earlier, as well as drive GM's EV1 and other electric cars and pickups from the major OEMs. I likewise got to meet a dedicated and fun cadre of EV hobbyists and enthusiasts. On January 1, 1998, EV World.com officially went live.
It was maybe a year later that I bought my first 'electric vehicle,' a Currie folding electric bicycle. In 2000, I bought my first hybrid, a Honda Insight (serial number 984) , which I kept for 10 years, eventually replacing it with a 2009 Prius. My next electric bicycle came through a barter arrangement with Wavecrest Laboratories in McClean, Virginia, who provided me with an early prototype version of their TidalForce M750.
The M750 is still an bizarre e-bike. Its 750W rear hub motor is Ninja silent, something that was a revolution for its time in the early 2000s. Based on then state-of-the-art NiMH battery chemistry, it was and remains an bizarre technological feat. Unfortunately, the company didn't survive, but my M750 has. I still ride it.
However, it has one major drawback. It is weighty as hell. nigh to 60 pounds, it's a suffer to lift; but so are most other electric bicycles, which tend to weight in the high-40s, low 50-pound category.
That's why I am so excited about the K15, but building the lightest e-bike of its kind wasn't my original intention.
About two years ago, I heard, via Hannes Neuport of ExtraEnergy in Germany, about the BIKE+ all-in-one motor by ZeHus s.r.l. Here was a compact, 250W hub motor that didn't require an external battery or controller. This was before the explosion of media interest around the Copenhagen Wheel. Intrigued, I started a Skype conversation with Giovanni Alli, one of the co-developers, in Milan, Italy. In the back of my mind, I thought this was a motor that I could accomplish something with. Exactly what, I wasn't sure.
Over the following months, I kept in touch with Alli and the team at ZeHus, whose roots are in Milan Polytechnic University, periodically reporting on their progress via EV World's newswire.
Then ultimate September, I attended Interbike in Las Vegas and had the random to actually try out the motor on the test track behind Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino. I was immensely impressed, not only by the amount of torque and the regenerative braking feature that occurs when you back pedal the bike, but likewise the fact that you control the motor with your smartphone. Yes, there's an app for that, both for iOS and Android.
ZeHus app showing screen for setting the level of electric assistance: far left in full-assistance, far birthright is zero assistance. Bike+ mode likewise has a 'mountain' setting for riding in more hilly terrain.
Last Fall, I decided that I wanted to derive ahold of one of the motors to start testing it in the "real world." Riding around a flat track in Las Vegas isn't the selfsame as the hills here in my hometown. ZeHus agreed to sell me a motor with the understanding that it was for testing purposes and that I was intending to become a manufacturer.
They did me no favors on the cost: I'd paid the complete charge for it since I was ordering only one unit. I arranged with my local bank to accomplish a wire transfer to Italy and had DHL airfreight to me. It arrived two days before Christmas.
While I was working on getting the motor, I was likewise looking for a suitable 'mule' on which to install the motor. At first I thought I'd just buy a cheap used bike off Craig's List or from one of a half dozen pawn shops around town. They always seem to beget a stable of used bikes parked out front. ZeHus advised me that I needed to outcome sure that whichever bike I ended up using, it was vital that the distance between the rear drop-outs, that's where the rear wheel mounts to the frame, was precisely 120 mm. I made a plastic cutout 120 mm in length that I carried around in my wallet to measure various bikes.
However, before I actually bought a bike, someone alerted me to a company in Minneapolis called Greenstar. They had a aesthetic bamboo and aluminum bike for sale at a very reasonable charge as bamboo bikes go: less than $500. Now that was way more than what I was originally expecting to pay since I was only wanting something on which to test the motor. But the credence of a bike made from sustainable bamboo and recycled aluminum really struck a chord with me.
I had previously read William McDonough and Michael Braungart's 'Upcycle,' The sequel of 'Cradle to Cradle,' they wrangle that with forethought they can actually create products that derive better when they are recycled, or "upcycled." It was about this time that I started to Think about an electric bicycle based on the upcycle principle. I even approached CocaCola with the credence of creating electric bicycles from "upcycled" aluminum pop cans and renting them to tourists. The proposal never got past middle management, but the seed had been planted in my mind.
So, when I saw the Greenstar Ecoforce 1, I contacted Eric Hiller in Minneapolis and he agreed to sell me a bike at dealer cost. It arrived two weeks before Christmas.
My first tip-off that I had something special on my hands is when Fedex left the box, unannounced, on my front porch. Used to manhandling my M750 and other conventional, but Somewhat lighter e-bikes sent to me to test, I expected this bike to subsist of similar mass. What I picked up was so light that at first I wondered if they'd sent me an vacant box. At 20 lbs., the Ecoforce 1 weighs one-third that my M750 does.
Not only was it surprisingly light, it was just downright beautiful. I'd selected the green frame and wheels (the bike likewise is available in white and sky blue) but the green, to me, just sent complete the birthright signals. Against the warm, honey-toned bamboo, it is just stunning. As one person on my Facebook page commented, "It's not a bike. It's a work of functional art."
Also, in case you weren't aware, pound-for-pound, bamboo is said to subsist stronger than steel.
Like most bicycles in the world, this one is made in China to Greenstar's specifications. It is single speed with a hybrid configuration that blends mountain bike-style handlebars with a road bike-type frame. Its lines are clean and clutter-free. The wheels are 700C by 23 mm on aluminum rims. It is the essence of minimalism: a faultless blend of figure and function.
Now with both bike and motor now in hand, my next task was to find a bike shop that would 'lace' the BIKE+ to the rear wheel. Originally, Sarah Johnson, the owner of Omaha Bicycle Company, agreed to accomplish it in her shop in Benson, but only if the motor arrived before her technician left on an extended bicycle tour across the American southwest. It did, but a death in the family compelled Sarah to nigh her shop on Christmas Eve. So, I picked up the bike and motor and eventually organize a shop that would occupy on the project. Interestingly, a pair other shops I called refused to accomplish it on principle.
"We don't mount motors on bicycles," one of them told me, with a hint of indignation.
But one did, the Bike Rack in west Omaha. Their lead technician, Kelly Smith was terrific to work with and before novel Years he had the bike ready to go. Before they rolled it out of the shop, he weighed it. His scale said it was just over 32 lbs, or less an 15 kg. I'll advance back to the number in a minute.
I got the bike home, took a bunch of digital photos, especially of the motor mounting and emailed them to ZeHus. Almost immediately, I got a reply, asking me if I had installed the locking bracket that came with the motor.
No, I hadn't, I replied. Kelly thought the steel dropouts were plenty strong to support the motor.
It is vital that the bracket subsist installed, ZeHus cautioned me. It is what makes their system work.
Okay. Back I went to the Bike Rack and few days later, Kelly called to screech he'd installed the required bracket.
Near as I can tell, and this fragment is obviously proprietary, making inescapable that the motor can't torque under load is censorious to the embedded software algorithms that control the system. In fact, when I installed the newest version of firmware on the motor, I had to insure that the bike was perfectly level during initial set up. I am guessing here, of course, but there must subsist an inclinometer in the motor that senses the bike's angle of elevation and uses that to determine when and how much electric assist to provide.
The BIKE+ motor operates in European pedelec mode, meaning there is no throttle. You pedal the bike just enjoy a regular bike and sensors determine, based your smartphone app setting, how much assistance to provide, ranging from complete E-bike mode to no assistance.
The BIKE+ mode, as seen on the above app photo, allows you to ride the bike indefinitely without ever having to plug it in to recharge the battery. Think of enjoy a Toyota Prius. In complete E-Bike mode, the 160W/h Boston Power lithium cells are noteworthy for at least 10 miles, actually about the achieve of the Prius Plug-In model. You recharge the battery through a small connector housed inside the motor shaft. Your smartphone talks to the motor via Bluetooth, which you activate by a few quick turns of the wheel. The app likewise shows distance traveled, degree of incline, battery-state-of-charge, and speed. You can even lock the motor internally with the app for added security. As long as there's a saturate in the battery pack, which is wrapped around the motor, the bike is going nowhere.
With the bike now assembled, I wanted to start testing it only for the weather here on the noteworthy Plains to turn polar for weeks on end. But every now and then, I had the opportunity to let various people ride it to gauge their impressions. Time and again I was told, "Bill, you requisite to bear this," or "Where can I buy one": the latter just yesterday from two local multimedia producers, who took it around the obscure and came back beaming.
I beget likewise used the bike to abet convince state and city officials to allow e-bikes that meet federal standards on bike paths where 'motorized vehicles' are not permitted. In fact, the bike is only the second bicycle ever allowed inside the Nebraska state capitol building, I was told. The first one was a Currie iZip Path that I borrowed from the University of Nebraska Omaha to point to to state legislators during testimony on a bill I helped initiate in 2014. That bill, revived in 2015, was signed into law in late February. It defines qualified e-bikes as "bicycles."
Last week, after showing the K15 to city officials in neighboring Council Bluffs, Iowa, their City Council approved a revision to their ordinance likewise now allowing e-bikes on their bike trails.
All this brings me to the conclusion to crowdfund the production of an initial 150 models of the bike, which I am now calling the K15 because it weighs under 15 kilograms and because 'BambooZal' just didn't click for me, for obvious reasons.
The credence is to expend the bike as a way to abet fund the progress of my first Q•Pod electric bicycle rental pop-up shop. I'll show you more about that project in the future. The K15 will subsist one of the 'premiums' offered to crowdfunders. I hope to launch the campaign this coming month.
Yesterday, I used North Sea Film's white stage to shot still photos, which you can note here, as well as B-roll video footage of the bike. Monday they shoot the crowdfunding video. My goal is to raise $300,000, most of which I hope to generate by taking orders for the K15s. After delivering the first 150 bikes, I level is to beget enough left over to transform their first repurposed shipping container into a solar-powered rental shop.
As you may subsist aware, some crowdfunding campaigns beget been wildly successful: Sondor raising an astounding $5.3 million for a Chinese-made corpulent tire cruiser. I don't await that level of response, especially since the K15 isn't being billed as the 'cheapest' electric bike. What it is, is maybe the lightest e-bike of its kind anywhere.
What I am hoping is that EV World readers will talk it up, share the link, show the story, and abet us "go viral." And maybe a few will even want to dwelling a early order: note the pre-reservation figure on the fund.quikbyke.com page. The success of the campaign rests a lot in your hands. You can abet outcome it hugely successful, allowing us to fulfill Quikbyke's mission of getting more of us off their car seats more often and onto bicycle saddles for "Fun, Fitness, and Saving Planet."
Are you ready to advance "Ride the Current"™ with me?
