IBM IBM Notes and Domino

Domino And Notes 10 finally Come To IBM i | killexams.com real Questions and Pass4sure dumps

February eleven, 2019 Alex Woodie

they are adage decent issues Come to those who wait. The IBM i group has waited over 10 years for a current release of Domino and Notes, and they occupy been rewarded terminal week when IBM introduced edition 10 is now available on IBM i.

Domino and Notes 10 is the primary main unencumber of the server section of the company collaboration platform for the intuition that Domino eight.5 changed into launched means returned in 2008 (edition 9 was a minor liberate). The future of the platform became up within the air for a while, and a lot of people who've committed a chunk of their careers to working on it were in doubt no matter if IBM would proceed to enhance it.

At one aspect in the early 2000s, the iSeries was the 2d greatest server platform for Domino (the server section of what became the Notes-Domino platform, and which now IBM is calling the Domino and Notes Platform), trailing simplest windows NT. loads of IBM i retail outlets ran their e mail servers on the Notes and Domino utility, specially after IBM nixed OfficeVision/400. the first dedicated AS/four hundred laptop, you'll endure in mind, became the yellow-striped “Bumblebee” providing, which changed into a success adequate for IBM to present additional dedicated servers.

As Domino and Notes gained current performance – including social media, cell interfaces, and rapid utility construction capabilities – many IBM i shops stayed with it, even though they didn’t utilize the brand current services. while the numbers are certainly down from their early 2000s top, anecdotal evidence says there’s nevertheless a considerable site in foundation of Domino on IBM i users.

Domino’s path to redemption began within the tumble of 2017, when IBM enlisted the assist of HCL technologies to co-advance Domino, Notes, and related items, akin to Sametime, visitor, and Verse. The organizations hosted the Domino2025 Jam event to generate activity amongst loyal consumers and solicit clean ideas for current points in a forthcoming version 10 unencumber.

That edition 10 unencumber shipped for windows, Linux, and different mainstream OSes in 2018, bringing a number of recent facets, similar to support for Node.js for growing current Domino/Notes apps, casting off the exigency to live taught Xpages, and current self-healing capabilities for clustered deployments, among other facets.

while the more advantageous Domino community was popping champagne to rejoice the birth of Domino and Notes 10, the IBM i mob changed into left striking for a little. The future of Domino and Notes on IBM i – which historically has constituted a mountainous percent of the Domino and Notes site in foundation – still was now not cemented in locality with a delivery date.

The suspense became popped remaining week when IBM introduced that Domino 10.0.1 and vacationer 10.0.1.1 on IBM i version 7.2 and seven.three grew to become available on February 5. The advice changed into welcomed by using Kim Greene, who has made a profession as a Domino on IBM i developer and advisor at Kim Greene Consulting.

“i hope you are as excited as i am to trap this exceptional, function wealthy, self-healing unlock purchasable on the hardware platform that's most synonymous with Domino, the IBM i,” she wrote on her Domino Diva weblog final week. “It’s built-in, secure, scalable, and incredibly available.”

The undeniable fact that IBM i 7.2 become supported along with IBM i 7.three became a very decent piece of information, Greene wrote. “The releases supported are: 7.2, 7.3, and seven.four (when it becomes obtainable),” she wrote. “The massive reduction is that 7.2 is supported, whew!”

there were a brace of IBM i-certain enhancements delivered with Domino 10.0.1, in response to Greene, including a brand current feature to simplify the management of daylight hours savings Time. With this unencumber, Domino will default to *TIMEZONE in the event you configure a brand current server, she says. prior to now, it became standard for directors to misconfigure the system. It’s “lengthy past due,” she writes.

one more configuration gotcha that has been smoothed over with the brand current unlock has to accomplish with changing the JVM configuration. The default JVM is the 32-bit JVM eight, however some Domino on IBM i clients can besides are looking to Use the sixty four-bit JVM 8 unencumber in its place. due to current variables delivered to the setup, it’s now more convenient to stream between 32-bit and sixty four-bit JVMs, based on Greene. Domino 10.0.1 will besides now turns MEMCHECK on with the aid of default, so that they can aid when admins are debugging classes.

There are besides adjustments to the default library where the licensed program executables install. “With libraries having a maximum size of ten characters, the nomenclature of QDOMINO8xx and QDOMINO9xx no longer works with version 10.x,” writes Greene, who’s the fundamental at Kim Greene Consulting. “for this intuition the library structure adjustments to QDOM100001 for version 10.0.1.”

Domino 10.0.1 is accessible in English. a bunch 1 language pack is obtainable that brings abet for

German, Spanish, Italian, French, Brazilian Portuguese, japanese, Korean, simplified chinese, and traditional chinese. IBM has besides site together a webpage explaining what’s current in Domino 10.0.1 for IBM i.

HCL applied sciences will pay IBM $1.eight billion, with the deal anticipated to shut in mid-2019. in addition to Notes and Domino, HCL is buying a number of other industry functions, together with: Appscan for comfortable application development, BigFix for comfy machine administration, Unica (on-premises) for advertising automation, Commerce (on-premises) for omni-channel eCommerce, Portal (on-premises) for digital adventure, and Connections for workstream collaboration.

"We reckon the time is usurp to divest these select collaboration, advertising and commerce software assets, which might live increasingly delivered as standalone products," John Kelly, IBM senior vice president, Cognitive options and analysis, wrote in a media advisory. " on the identical time, they accept as accurate with these products are a powerful strategic suitable for HCL, and that HCL is well placed to drive innovation and expand for their valued clientele."

IBM has more and more been getting into cloud and artificial intelligence over the past 4 years, and has constructed up different assets that it'll heart of attention on.

most of the applications being offered to HCL had been at the nascence obtained through IBM from other carriers.

IBM obtained Lotus application, maker of Notes and Domino, in 1995 for $three.5 billion, even though the Lotus company wasn't dropped by means of IBM until 2012.

AppScan which is now being sold to HCL, became once the cornerstone of the IBM Rational application portfolio. IBM got the AppScan product portfolio as section of the acquisition of security vendor Watchfire in June 2007.

IBM promoting Lotus Notes/Domino enterprise to HCL for $1.8B | killexams.com real Questions and Pass4sure dumps

IBM introduced closing evening that it is promoting the final components from its 1995 acquisition of Lotus to Indian company HCL for $1.8 billion.

IBM paid $3.5 billion for Lotus again within the day. The huge items listed below are Lotus Notes, Domino and Portal. These had been a huge section of IBM’s commercial enterprise industry for a very long time, however terminal 12 months huge Blue begun to draw away, selling the construction half to HCL, while holding control of revenue and advertising.

This announcement marks the stop of the line for IBM involvement. With the evolution of the platform out of its manage, and in want of cash after spending $34 billion for crimson Hat, most likely IBM with no concern determined it not made experience to retain any section of this in-house.

As for HCL, it sees a chance to proceed to build the Notes/Domino business, and it’s seizing it with this purchase. “The gigantic-scale deployments of those items deliver us with a advantageous probability to attain and serve lots of world corporations across a wide array of industries and markets,” C Vijayakumar, president and CEO at HCL technologies, referred to in a statement adage the deal.

Alan Lepofsky, an analyst at Constellation analysis who maintains shut watch on the industry collaboration space, says the sale may symbolize a fresh nascence for software that IBM hasn’t definitely been paying shut attention to for a while. “HCL is much more interested in Notes/Domino than IBM has been for a decade. they are investing closely, attempting to rejuvenate the manufacturer,” Lepofsky informed TechCrunch.

while this utility may besides believe long within the enamel, Notes and Domino are nonetheless in Use in many corners of the business, and this is very accurate in EMEA (Europe, core East and Africa) and AP (Asia Pacific), Lepofsky noted.

He introduced that IBM appears to live completely exiting the collaboration house with this sale. “It seems that IBM is completed with collaboration, out of the game,” he said.

This lag makes sense for IBM, which is relocating in a unique direction because it develops its cloud enterprise. The red Hat acquisition in October, in specific, indicates that the industry desires to embody private and hybrid cloud deployments, and older software relish Lotus Notes and Domino don’t truly play a job in that world.

The deal, which is bailiwick to regulatory approval methods, is anticipated to shut in the middle of subsequent 12 months.

Working with the OSGi Console | killexams.com real questions and Pass4sure dumps

This chapter is from the book 

Before delving into the inner workings of the OSGi console, it is best to briefly clarify OSGi. OSGi stands for Open Services Gateway initiative framework. This framework allows software to live written and executed as independent components. In OSGi-speak, these components are referred to as bundles. OSGi is used in a wide scope of applications, from client programs such as Eclipse and IBM Lotus Notes, to mobile phones, to server applications such as IBM Lotus Domino. As a result of their modular nature, OSGi bundles can live started, stopped, and debugged on an individual basis, without the exigency for stopping or restarting the entire platform. Both the Domino server and the Notes client Use Eclipse’s implementation of OSGi (Equinox) as their OSGi runtime platform.

OSGi was added to the Domino platform in release 8.5.2. As a result, in Domino 8.5.2, the XPages runtime was repackaged to speed as OSGi bundles (instead of just a regular collection of Java JARS), besides referred to as Eclipse plug-ins.

The OSGi console allows for the input of commands that the OSGi platform then performs. The platform posts the results of such commands back to the console. The OSGi platform itself has a whole host of commands that can simplify the troubleshooting of problems. The OSGi console can assist developers in developing XPages controls and applications, as well as assisting support personnel in diagnosing runtime issues. Developers who extend the XPages runtime by creating libraries will find the OSGi console commands to live a particularly powerful tool in analyzing problems. The OSGi console is of particular Use when the developer/administrator needs to know whether individual plug-ins (or sets of plug-ins) are loading correctly or which version of a plug-in is in use.

As mentioned earlier, OSGi is embedded within both the Notes client and the Domino server. Depending on where your XPages application is running (whether on the client or the server), your method of accessing the OSGi console will vary. They start by explaining how to access the OSGi console on the Domino server.

OSGi is embedded within the HTTP task on the Domino server, as a result, the OSGi console is started automatically whenever the HTTP task is started. OSGi console commands are routed to the OSGi console via the HTTP task. That is, when entering an OSGi console command on the Domino server, the user must relate the HTTP task to route the specified command to the OSGi console—for example:

tell http osgi <<command>>

Here, <<command>> is the appellation of the OSGi console command. Any OSGi command can live executed using the preceding syntax.

When it comes to OSGi commands, every developer and administrator should know several rudimentary commands. These commands can live your “go to” commands when problems arise—say, when you suspect bundle loading might live a factor. Even when you accomplish not arbiter that bundle loading is the problem, it is often best to first substantiate that the bundle is actually loaded before proceeding with other debugging techniques.

Table 3.2 lists some of the more commonly used OSGi commands that are available to Use for diagnosing plug-in issues on the Domino server (and besides the Notes client). In Table 3.2, bundle-symbolic-name is referenced extensively. This is the appellation by which the OSGi platform references bundles. bundle-symbolic-name correlates directly to the Bundle-SymbolicName manifest header, often referred to as the plug-in name.

Table 3.2. OSGi Console Commands

Command Syntax

Description

tell http osgi diag <bundle-symbolic-name>

Diagnoses the status of the bundle whose appellation is provided. Determines whether the bundle is resolved and, if not, states why the bundle is not resolved.

tell http osgi ss <bundle-symbolic-name>

Lists the status of raw bundles in the system. Optionally, a symbolic appellation or a symbolic appellation prefix can live provided to obtain the status of a particular bundle or a subset of bundles.

tell http osgi start <bundle-symbolic-name>

Starts the bundle with the specified symbolic name.

tell http osgi stop <bundle-symbolic-name>

Stops the bundle with the specified symbolic name.

tell http osgi b <bundle-symbolic-name>

Prints metadata relating to the specified bundle.

tell http osgi headers <bundle-symbolic-name>

Lists the OSGi headers for the specified bundle.

tell http osgi help

Lists raw the OSGi command available on the server, along with some text describing each command.

All the commands listed in Table 3.2 can live entered via the Domino server console, with the results of such commands being printed back to the console, as illustrated in pattern 3.4.

Figure 3.4

Figure 3.4. Running an OSGi command on the Domino Server Console

All the commands referenced in Table 3.2 can alternatively rob the bundle id as a parameter (instead of the bundle-symbolic-name). The bundle id is a numeric ID that the OSGi runtime assigns to the bundle during platform initialization. The ID might vary from instance to instance of the platform, but users might find it easier to input than having to enter the entire bundle symbolic name. Examples of how to determine and Use the bundle id are given later in this chapter.

Rarely does a single OSGi console command respond raw the questions on why a plug-in is not loading or operating as expected. The following sections clarify in greater detail how you can Use each of these commands and the results you can hope to discern from executing such commands.

diag <bundle-symbolic-name>

This is one of the most valuable commands in your arsenal and will likely live the one you’ll Use most frequently when diagnosing issues. You can Use this command to determine whether a bundle is resolved within the OSGi platform. The status returned by this command will live one of the following:

  • No unresolved constraints
  • Unresolved constraint
  • If No unresolved constraints is the returned status, it suggests that the system has recognized the bundle and that raw dependencies of the bundle are satisfied. When an Unresolved constraint status is returned, it suggests that one or more bundles or packages that the bundle requires are missing or cannot live loaded. It is worth noting here that a bundle might still fail to start even though the OSGi console reports that the bundle has been resolved. If a bundle fails to start and is resolved, some code in the bundle’s activator likely is failing (throwing an exception).

    Sample usage:

    tell http osgi diag com.ibm.xsp.core

Listing 3.8 shows the typical output of running the diag command against the com.ibm.xsp.core plug-in.

Listing 3.8. Result of Running the diag Command Against a Specific Bundle—Successful Case > relate http osgi diag com.ibm.xsp.core 10/17/2011 09:43:14 PM initial@reference:file:../../shared/eclipse/plugins/com.ibm.xsp. core_8.5.3.20110629-1645/[119] 10/17/2011 09:43:14 PM No unresolved constraints.

In this case, the diag command reports that there were No unresolved constraints against the entered bundle symbolic name—in other words, the system recognizes the given bundle. Upon closer examination, the user can obtain further information about the bundle in question. It can determine where the bundle being used by the platform is installed, and the platform-assigned bundle id can besides live obtained.

From reading the console output, the user can discern that the bundle is installed to ../../shared/eclipse/plugins/com.ibm.xsp.core_8.5.3.20110629-1645. The location specified is relative to the osgi/rcp/eclipse directory, which is a child of the Domino program directory. In this case, the console output indicates that the plug-in is installed at: <domino program directory>/osgi/shared/eclipse/plugins.

Finally, the output states the platform-assigned bundle id for the specified bundle. 119 is the id assigned to this bundle in this example. As stated previously, the OSGi commands listed here can Use the bundle id interchangeably. In this example, executing the following command has identical output to that in Listing 3.8.

    Sample usage:

    tell http osgi diag 119

Listing 3.9 shows sample output of running the diag command in an unsuccessful scenario.

Listing 3.9. Result of Running the diag Command Against a Specific Bundle—Error Case > relate http osgi diag com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt 09/09/2011 04:05:51 PM update@../../../data/domino/workspace/applications/eclipse/plugins/com. ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt_8.5.3.201108111413.jar [116] 09/09/2011 04:05:51 PM Direct constraints which are unresolved: 09/09/2011 04:05:51 PM Missing host com.ibm.xsp.extlib_0.0.0.

In Listing 3.9, you can discern that the OSGi platform reports that the bundle in question is not resolved as a result of a missing dependency. They can discern from the console output that the OSGi platform has actually organize the bundle that they are looking for (com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt), but as one of the bundles that com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt depends on is not resolved, the com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt bundle does not trap resolved itself. Looking a dinky more closely at the console output, they can determine the following:

The bundle com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt is installed at ../../../data/domino/workspace/applications/eclipse/plugins/com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt_8.5.3.201108111413.jar. They now know that this path is relative to the <domino program directory>/osgi/rcp/eclipse directory. Hence, they can deduce that com.ibm.extlib.sbt is installed at the <domino program directory>/data/domino/workspace/applications/eclipse/plugins/ directory.

The OSGi platform–assigned bundle id for this bundle is 116.

One other tidbit of information can live extracted from the console output, in this case. The final line of the output tells us that the host is missing:

    Missing host com.ibm.xsp.extlib_0.0.0

This tells us that the bundle they are looking for (com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt) is, in fact, a plug-in fragment, and the unresolved constraint (com.ibm.xsp.extlib) is the host plug-in.

ss, ss <bundle-symbolic-name>, or ss <bundle-name-prefix>

Similar to the diag command, this command quickly determines the status of a particular bundle—or raw the bundles installed in the platform. Users can optionally specify a bundle appellation or a bundle appellation prefix to trap the status of specific bundles. The returned status shows the bundle id, state, and bundle appellation of raw bundles. In many situations, this command is just as useful as the diag command because it besides reports the status of a bundle. This command does not relate the user why a particular bundle is not loading, but it does relate the user the state of a bundle.

    Sample usage:

    tell http osgi ss

Listing 3.10 shows the result of running the ss command without any parameters.

Listing 3.10. Listing 3.10 lists a subset of the information that displays when this command is speed in a commonplace server environment. However, the listing does exhibit raw the information needed to understand the output of the command.

The command outputs several valuable pieces of information about each bundle:

  • Bundle-id—for example, 2, which is the OSGi platform–assigned ID of the bundle.
  • Bundle state—for example, RESOLVED, which is the state of the bundle within the OSGi platform. A bundle can occupy one of seven states. Table 3.3 explains raw of these.
  • Bundle name—for example com.ibm.eclipse.equinox.preferences.nl_6.2.3.20110624-1648, which is the bundle symbolic appellation with its version information appended to the name.
  • Master or Fragments—for example, Master=71. This data tells whether the bundle in question is a plug-in or a fragment. If the bundle specifies neither Master nor Fragments, it is automatically implied that the bundle is a plug-in bundle. The digits corresponding to the fragments or plug-ins are the OSGi platform–assigned bundle ids of the fragments or the master plug-in of the bundle in question.
  • Sample usage:

    tell http osgi ss com.ibm.xsp.extlib

Listing 3.11 shows the result of running the ss command with a bundle prefix specified.

Similar to Listing 3.10, Listing 3.11 shows the results of executing the ss command, only this time the command is passed a bundle symbolic appellation as a parameter. The ss command finds raw bundles on the system that either start with the parameter or occupy a bundle symbolic appellation that is the identical as the parameter. Listing 3.11 lists raw the bundles, along with their bundle id and state.

Table 3.3 lists raw the workable states of an OSGi bundle.

    Table 3.3. OSGi Bundle States

    State

    Description

    UNINSTALLED

The bundle is uninstalled and is unusable.

    INSTALLED

The bundle has been installed, but the platform has not yet resolved it.

    RESOLVED

The bundle has been resolved and is in a position to live started.Note that it is still workable for the bundle to fail to start, even though it has been resolved by the environment.

    <<LAZY>>

Similar to RESOLVED, the platform has resolved the bundle and is in a position to live started. The bundle is not yet vigorous because it has been configured (via its bundle manifest) to live initialized lazily–that is, only when another vigorous bundle references the bundle will it live activated.

    STARTING

The bundle is in the process of starting. Either another bundle has specifically caused the bundle to start (by referring to a class within the bundle) or the user has manually started the bundle via the console. Rarely is a bundle in this state because it is transient.

    STOPPING

The bundle is in the process of shutting down. Similar to STARTING, a bundle rarely is in this state.

    ACTIVE

The bundle is running within the OSGi platform.

Developers and administrators should live alert that, on the Domino server, the state of a bundle is not persisted from one session to the next—that is, after the HTTP task is restarted, any bundles that were started manually in the previous session must live started again. Luckily, the ss command has an dispute for filtering raw bundles in a given state. The ss command can filter the bundles based on their state, by appending -s [state] to the command syntax.

    Sample usage:

tell http osgi ss -s active

Figure 3.5 shows the output of running the ss command with the -s vigorous argument.

    Figure 3.5

Figure 3.5. Result of running the ss command in the Domino server console

    start <bundle-symbolic-name>

This command requests that the platform manually start the specified bundle. Calling this command does not guarantee that the specified bundle will live started. An exception can still occur during bundle initialization that would intuition the bundle initialization to fail. Performing an ss command after the start command reports the status of the bundle. This command is helpful when a current bundle has been installed on the server, but the administrator or developer is not in a position to restart the HTTP task to start the current bundle.

    Sample usage:

    tell http osgi start com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt

Figure 3.6 shows that, by running a combination of the ss and start commands, a bundle can live started and its state can live verified.

    Figure 3.6

Figure 3.6. Result of running the start and ss commands in the console

    stop <bundle-symbolic-name>

This command tells the platform to stop the specified bundle. Users should live mindful when calling this on a production environment. In some cases, it might not live workable for the platform to stop the bundle. If this is the case, the intuition will live printed to the console.

    Sample usage:

    tell http osgi stop com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt

Figure 3.7 shows how running a combination of the ss and stop command stops a bundle and verifies its state.

    b <bundle-symbolic-name>

This command prints raw metadata relating to the specified bundle. The metadata includes imported packages, required bundles, exported packages, bundle location, and so on. This command is useful when the developer needs to quickly verify that the bundle loaded by the platform has the meta information that the developer believes it has.

    Sample usage:

    tell http osgi b com.ibm.xsp.extlib

Listing 3.12 shows a subset of the output from running the b command against a specified bundle.

Intel Vets relate Trump Iran Is Not Top Terror Sponsor | killexams.com real questions and Pass4sure dumps

A group of U.S. intelligence veterans urges President Trump to stop his administration’s unfounded claims about Iran being the leading state sponsor of terrorism when U.S. allies, such as Saudi Arabia, are clearly much guiltier.

    MEMORANDUM FOR: The President

FROM: Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity

SUBJECT: Is Iran the “World’s Leading Sponsor of Terrorism?”

    EXECUTIVE SUMMARY/BACKGROUND

We are concerned by recent strident and stark public statements from key members of your Administration that paint Iran in very alarmist terms. The middling American, without the benefit of history, could easily live persuaded that Iran poses an imminent threat and that there is no alternative for us but military conflict.

President Donald Trump addresses the nation about his Iran policy on Oct. 13, 2017. (Screenshot from Whitehouse.gov)

We find this uncomfortably chummy territory. Ten years ago former President George W. Bush was contemplating a war with Iran when, in November of 2007, intelligence analysts issued a formal National Intelligence evaluate (NIE) debunking the current conventional wisdom; namely, that Iran was on the verge of getting a nuclear weapon.  The NIE concluded that Iran had stopped working on a nuclear weapon in 2003.

Recalling this jiffy in his memoir, conclusion Points, President Bush famous that the NIE’s “eye-popping” intelligence findings stayed his hand.  He added this rhetorical question: “How could I possibly clarify using the military to slay the nuclear facilities of a country the intelligence community said had no vigorous nuclear weapons program?”

We believe that you are facing a similar situation today. But instead of an inaccurate pretense that Iran has nuclear weapons, the current canard to warrant war with Iran is the pretense that Iran remains the “world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism.” This is incorrect, as they clarify below.

     * * *

One of the recurring mountainous bipartisan lies being pushed on the public with the enthusiastic abet of a largely pliant media is that Iran is the prime sponsor of terrorism in the world today.

In the recent presentation of your administration’s National Security Strategy for 2018, the point is made that:

“Iran, the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism, has taken edge of instability to expand its influence through partners and proxies, weapon proliferation, and funding. . . . Iran continues to perpetuate the cycle of violence in the region, causing grievous harm to civilian populations.”

Those sentiments are echoed by several other countries of the Middle East. Saudi Arabia’s foreign Minister, Adel al-Jubeir, for example, declared in October 2015 that: Iran “is the biggest sponsor of terrorism in the world, and it is working on destabilizing the region.”

The Saudi foreign minister conveniently declined to mention that 15 of the 19 terrorists who hijacked planes and attacked America on 11 September 2001 were Saudis, not Iranians.  And, while Iran was an vigorous promoter of terrorism two decades ago, it is no longer in the forefront of global terrorism. Ironically, that dubious distinction now goes to Iran’s accusers — first and foremost, Saudi Arabia.

The depiction of Iran as “the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism” is not supported by the facts. While Iran is guilty of having used terrorism as a national policy tool, the Iran of 2017 is not the Iran of 1981. In the early days of the Islamic Republic, Iranian operatives routinely carried out car bombings, kidnappings and assassinations of dissidents and of American citizens. That has not been the case for many years. Despite frequent claims by U.S. officials that Iran is engaged in terrorism, they simply note that the incidents recorded annually in the U.S. Department of State’s Patterns of Global Terrorism rarely identifies a terrorist incident as an act by or on behalf of Iran.

Iran’s relationship with Hezbollah besides has evolved radically. In the early years of the Islamic Republic, Hezbollah was often a proxy and sub-contractor for Iran. But during the terminal 20 years Hezbollah has become an entity and political constrain in its own right. It fought Israel to a standstill in 2006 in southern Lebanon, which was a watershed jiffy in establishing Hezbollah’s transformation into a conventional army. In the intervening years, Hezbollah, which is now section of the Lebanese government, besides has turned away from the radical, religious driven violence that is the hallmark of the Sunni extremists, relish ISIS.

    Iran’s Asymmetrical Response

After Iran fell under the rule of the Ayatollah in 1979 terrorism, its role in towering profile terrorist attacks, such as the taking of U.S. hostages and the bombings of the U.S. Embassy and the Marine barracks in Lebanon, fed understandable U.S. animosity towards Iran.  But Iran’s actions were not driven primarily by blind hatred or radical religious views.  For Iran terrorism was a way to punch back against more powerful foes, principally the United States, which was providing military and intelligence support to Iran’s neighbor and enemy, Iraq.

Portrait of the late Ruhollah Khomeini by Mohammad Sayyid

The Iranians were besides pragmatic and had direct dealings with Israel. During the early days of the Iranian revolution the Mullahs, despite publicly denouncing Israel, happily accepted clandestine military support from the Israelis. Israel was equally pragmatic. The Israeli leaders ignored the Mullahs and gave the support as a means of helping counter the threat posed by Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. A classic case of the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

The public image of Iran as a hotbed of fanatical terrorists has been usurped since the August 1998 bombings of the U.S. Embassies in east Africa by Al Qaeda and other radical Sunni entities. The U.S. Government’s own list of terrorist attacks since 2001 shows a dramatic drop in the violence carried out by Iran and an accompanying surge in horrific acts by radical Sunni Muslims who are not aligned with Iran.  The latest edition of the Global Terrorism Index, a project of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, shows that four groups accounted for 74 percent of raw fatalities from terrorism in 2015 — Boko Haram, Al-Qaeda, the Taliban and ISIS.

Thirteen of the 14 Muslim Groups identified by the U.S. intelligence community as actively hostile to the US are Sunni, not Shia, and are not supported by Iran:

    – ISIS (Sunni)

    – The Al-Nusra Front (Sunni)

    – Al-Qa’ida Central (Sunni)

    – Al-Qa’ida in Magheb (Sunni)

    – Al-Qa’ida in Arabian Peninsula (Sunni)

    – Boku Haram (Sunni)

    – Al-Shabbab (Sunni)

    – Khorassan Group (Sunni)

    – Society of the Muslim Brothers (Sunni)

    – Sayyaf Group in the Philippines (Sunni)

    – Taliban in Pakistan and Afghanistan (Sunni)

    – Lashgar i Taiba (Sunni)

    – Jemaa Islamiya (Sunni)

    – Houthis (Shia)

The terminal major terrorist storm causing casualties that is linked to Iran was the July 2012 bombing of a bus with Israeli tourists in Bulgaria. That departure from Iran’s more recent policy on terrorism was retaliation for what Iran perceived to live Israel’s role in assassinating five Iranian scientists involved with Iran’s Nuclear program, between January 2010 and January 2012 (the dates and names of those attacked are appended).

One can easily imagine the outrage and lust for revenge that would sweep the U.S., if Americans believed a foreign country sent operatives into the United States who in turn murdered engineers and scientists working on sensitive U.S. defense projects.

    Special Operations

There occupy been other terrorist attacks inside Iran presence the handprint of support from the United States. Author Sean Naylor, Relentless Strike, which details the history of operations carried out by U.S. Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) over the past 30 years, sheds light on this uncomfortable truth:

The late Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

“JSOC personnel besides worked with the Mujahideen-e-Khalq (MEK), a militant Iranian exile group that had based itself in Iraq after falling afoul of the ayatollahs’ regime in Tehran. The State Department had placed the MEK on its list of designated terrorist organizations, but that didn’t stop JSOC from taking an attitude of “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” toward the group. “They were a group of folks that could transit the border, and they were willing to abet us out on what they wanted to accomplish with Iran,” said a special operations officer.”

The MEK were classified as a terrorist group, until the United States decided that as long as the MEK would abet Kill Iranians rather than Americans, that they were no longer terrorists. The MEK’s history of terrorism is quite clear. Among more than a dozen examples over the terminal four decades these four are illustrative:

  • During the 1970s, the MEK killed U.S. military personnel and U.S. civilians working on defense projects in Tehran and supported the takeover in 1979 of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran.
  • In 1981, the MEK detonated bombs in the head office of the Islamic Republic Party and the Premier’s office, killing some 70 high-ranking Iranian officials, including Iran’s President, Premier, and Chief Justice.
  • In April 1992, the MEK conducted near-simultaneous attacks on Iranian embassies and installations in 13 countries, demonstrating the group’s talent to mount large-scale operations overseas.
  • In April 1999, the MEK targeted key military officers and assassinated the deputy chief of the Iranian Armed Forces generic Staff.
  • Despite this history, a bipartisan parade of prominent U.S. political and military leaders has lobbied on behalf of MEK and has been well compensated in return.

    Benighted Policy So Far

In the ultimate ironic turn, the U.S.-led 2003 war in Iraq played a censorious role in Iran’s resurgence as a regional power. Saddam Hussein was replaced by Shia muslims who had received sanctuary in Iran for many years and Baathist institutions, including the Army, were taken over by Iraqis sympathetic to Tehran.

Iran has Come out ahead in Iraq and, with the 2015 nuclear agreement in place, Iran’s commercial and other ties occupy improved with key NATO allies and the other major world players—Russia and China in particular.

Official pronouncements on censorious national security matters exigency to live based on facts. Hyperbole in describing Iran’s terrorist activities can live counterproductive. For this reason, they convoke attention to Ambassador Nikki Haley’s recent statement that it is arduous to find a “terrorist group in the Middle East that does not occupy Iran’s fingerprints raw over it.” The truth is quite different. The majority of terrorist groups in the region are neither creatures nor puppets of Iran. ISIS, Al-Qaeda and Al-Nusra are three of the more prominent that Come to mind.

You occupy presented yourself as someone willing to speak arduous truths in the countenance of establishment pressure and not to accept the status quo. You spoke out during the campaign against the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq as a historic mistake of epic proportions. You besides correctly captured the mood of many Americans fatigued from constant war in far away lands. Yet the torrent of warnings from Washington about the dangers supposedly posed by Iran and the exigency to confront them are being widely perceived as steps toward reversing your pledge not to trap embroiled in current wars.

We cheer you to reflect on the warning they raised with President George W. Bush almost 15 years ago, at a similar historic juncture:

“after watching Secretary Powell today, they are convinced that you would live well served if you widened the discussion … beyond the circle of those advisers clearly bent on a war for which they discern no compelling intuition and from which they believe the unintended consequences are likely to live catastrophic.”
