IBM has introduced conclusion-of-aid for its IBM WebSphere Commerce v7.x version. The D-day is finish of April 2019. extended usher is except December 2021, however that requires a separate contract and springs with a value. For omnichannel agents internationally, hence, a platform upgrade/migration necessary is just around the corner. Most must start the sustain at some aspect over the following couple of months and quarters. via their reckoning, 85% of the IBM WCS retain in ground is on v7.x. hence a spacious harmony of the WCS neighborhood will first hold to resolve no matter if to migrate to v8.x or v9.0 and assume the primary steps towards what would actually subsist a huge upgrade.
When a tremendous platform confederate proclaims an end-of-existence resolution it is a fait accompli, an imposition an business can not result much about. It (justifiably) appears dote a pointless disruption of company-as-standard. despite the fact, the gracious news is that the IBM WebSphere Commerce v9.0 represents a spacious architectural departure from the previous and introduces a set of adjustments that mutually work in opposition t easing deployment and ongoing management. The advancements are appreciable and span microservices, Dockerization, independent scaling of add-ons; less difficult, much less intrusive customization; and a headless structure that affords considerable latitude on how the storefront is designed, constructed, and maintained.
Microservices and Dockerization. retailers far and wide the realm are working on breaking out of their legacy monoliths, decreasing the dimension of deployment units to obtain agility, standard to competing within the age of Amazon. The platform companies hold finally begun to answer the siren denomination and assume certain steps to re-architect their systems. a superb exemplar of the above is WCS v9.0. The product comes in the benevolent of 5 distributed servers, the transaction server, the quest server, the utility server, the extension server, and the rescue server — and every ships with its personal pre-configured Docker image. The 5 can total subsist independently managed and scaled, and naturally the Docker-based way aids DevOps automation. The different add-ons communicate via leisure APIs. The principle of smaller and impartial deployment units were extended to ongoing protection. enhancements and fixes can subsist provided as Docker pictures as neatly. IBM self-describes the transition from the past monolith as an implementation of the accepted Strangler sample.
Novel approach to customization. Customization is now externalized from the out-of-container code and a portion of the xC (which actually expands to externalized customization) framework. custom enterprise logic can subsist deployed on a separate server, which eases the way of ongoing administration, comparable to applying repair packs and feature packs. xC furthers the reason behind CI/CD as adjustments to custom code would not necessitate checking out of the out-of-the box code. The xC approach doesn't aid total eventualities at the moment, but the record is anticipated to develop. also, unvarying customization remains supported, though spend of both xC and the natural model in the same implementation isn't recommended.
Headless structure. The maintain server has been decoupled from the customization, transaction, and search servers, and communicates with the repose of the platform by the spend of relaxation APIs. The shop server can now subsist managed and scaled independently. also, companies can spend potent content material administration programs such because the Adobe sustain supervisor or the Watson content material Hub to build personalized storefronts that are powered by way of leisure APIs.
Evolution of the expertise stack. edition 7 became a very long time in the past. It went GA in 2009. As would subsist expected, the edifice blocks at the flash are more modern. The WebSphere utility Server has been changed with the aid of the WebSphere Liberty server, which is light-weight , has a smaller server footprint, and would requires less infrastructure means (the transactional server is still on the WebSphere utility Server). past the open source Liberty server, other elements of modernization were introduction of JPA as an alternative of its massive weight counterpart EJB and JQuery in lieu of the Dojo toolkit. The Aurora starter save, which ships out of the field, has been absolutely rewritten in JQuery.
lastly, the route to WCS v9 upgrade will scope from consumer to consumer. There are a two leading approaches that may also subsist regarded, particularly the finished platform engineering way and an initial lift-and-shift way adopting minimal architectural adjustments mandated for WebSphere Commerce v9 which might then lead to iteratively adopting different architectural and practical capabilities of the WebSphere Commerce v9 platform. The applicable upgrade direction will also subsist adopted in line with the output of the specific evaluation of the current state in addition to business requirements.

When they first retain together their list of trend-setting products three years ago, the IT landscape was pretty rocky. Seemingly well-conceived software solutions couldn't find markets. Often desperate consolidation prevailed. Budgets were tight for vendors and their customers alike. So, they assembled an informal panel of analysts, consultants, editorial colleagues and users/customers to abet identify some 50 companies that appeared to subsist well positioned to lead the way and a few loosely defined categories. In some cases, despite identifying innovative technology, they misjudged the marketplace.
In 2004, they offered a second list, but dropped the categories because the chosen applications didn't apt into simple molds—the barriers of classification were breaking down. That blurring of lines a year ago is even more evident today.
In a inquisitive sense, the list below indicates that information management has matured. They hold long contended that KM is an attitude, not an application, and the flexibility of the software on the list further proves it. You'll notice, of course, common themes in their selections. Content management (in its broadest sense) is well represented. You will certainly survey a number of search-related solutions. business process management is another "category" that crops up regularly, as does collaboration.
The common thread running through total the products listed below is the unique value—and potential value—they proffer the organization, its workers and their various constituencies. Not total hold been implemented exclusively in business-related environments. Nor were total introduced in 2005; some were launched later last year but are now demonstrating their value to customers. And, in many cases, it is precisely the vision of customers who implemented the products that qualifies them as trend- setting by opening markets not originally considered by the vendor. They hold also identified products that hold yet to gain traction, but they believe they may. It would subsist presumptuous to suggest anything other than that the market will ultimately decide.
As was the case last year, they evaluated more than 200 vendors, whose combined offerings top the 1,200 mark. It bears mentioning that these are not the only trend-setting products on the market today, rather they are the ones upon which their panel agreed. And just what were the criteria for selection? As they hold in years past, they considered usability, flexibility, adoption rate and total cost of ownership. And they also recognized some vendors for their vision toward the future or for a collection of offerings, rather than a specific product or compelling newfangled version of an existing one.
In each and every case, the thoughtfulness and polish of the software certainly warrants further investigation, and we're confident there are a number of products listed below that will dramatically boost the productivity of any type of organization.

In-DepthApplication servers arrive into focus
Three-tier and multi-tier computing has been a goal dating back to the first Client/ Server Age. As client/ server systems rolled out in the early '90s, it became clear that application developers and system designers needed a means of separating data, business logic and presentation.
With the spend of the Web, intranet and Internet technologies in corporate computing, such n-tier computing is birth to become a reality for companies and applications of total sizes. Leading the way are a number of vendors that hold entered the vaguely defined application server market space with varying degrees of Java support. But this market may now subsist coming into focus. Increasingly, application servers can subsist thought of as definable portions of middleware used to store application logic, integrate multiple back-end databases and legacy systems, and serve multiple client types, subsist they Web browsers or traditional desktop applications.
How does this work in practice? newfangled York City-based Time Warner's Book-of-the-Month Club (BOMC), for example, saw the benefits of application servers on its internal corporate network even before the now-common phrase 'intranet' had been coined. According to Brad Reisner, director of technology and progress at BOMC, the company had (and still has) a large population of Macintosh users that needed access to central corporate systems that were accessible by PC only.
"There were a few harebrained ideas dote running Soft Windows on each machine, but the cost was too high," Reisner said.
Book-of-the-Month Club already had an Oracle Corp. database in-house, so they asked the Redwood Shores, Calif.-based arduous if they could spend Version 7's Web technology inside the office, not necessarily over the Internet. "The Oracle Application Server allows us to glean data in their Oracle databases and gives us a way to tie into those databases with Netscape," Reisner said. "Everyone wanted Netscape."
A fledgling intranet was just the beginning. Today, the company uses Oracle's Application Server technology as the ground for three major E-commerce applications that serve more than 4 million BOMC members and draw some 2.25 million hits per month. While Reisner still prefers to spend a text editor for his progress work, he is pleased with Oracle's application management capabilities.
Things change quickly
When Application progress Trends reviewed the subject of application servers earlier this year [see "Web, Web everywhere," January 1998, p. 51], there were only a handful of vendors with such offerings, most of which were start-ups focusing mainly on the Web. These companies included WebLogic, Bluestone Software, Kiva Software and NetDynamics.
As with most Internet-related technologies, things hold changed quickly in the application server space. Sun Microsystems Inc., Palo Alto, Calif., is in the process of closing a deal to buy privately held NetDynamics Inc., Menlo Park, Calif., while Kiva Software was scooped up by Mountain View, Calif.-based Netscape Communications Corp. earlier this year. Some pundits hold pointed to these acquisitions as evidence that the market is not strong enough to support vendors with a sole focus on application servers. Others survey this as a sign that it is now mainstream technology.
Since the birth of 1998, there hold been announcements from many vendors, spacious and small, touting newfangled application server offerings. The father of modern computing, IBM, takes another step forward this month with its newfangled WebSphere offering, which is said to augment standard Apache Web servers with support for application logic. IBM also has Lotus' Domino line as portion of its many middle-tier offerings, and partnership agreements with some third-party application server vendors. Oracle is in the process of releasing Version 4.0 of its application server. Bluestone Software Inc., Mount Laurel, N.J., and WebLogic Inc., San Francisco, hold beefed up their respective offerings with a number of features, most notably support for the newfangled Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs) standard.
And there is more: Secant, Novera, Vision, Allaire, Prolifics, Progress and others are also offering some type of application server strategy to users. [For more on Enterprise JavaBeans, survey "Java component dream gains steam," Application progress Trends, June 1998, p. 29.]
Where the first incarnations of application servers typically targeted browser and Java clients only, vendors today are targeting multiple-client support on multiple platforms.
"We don't believe client/ server is going away," said Steve Clark, vice president, enterprise application platform, Sybase Corp., Emeryville, Calif. "We now hold a single environment for client/server and Web-based distributed applications."
A gracious characterization of the market can subsist seen in recent announcements from Inprise Corp. (formerly Borland), Scotts Valley, Calif., and Sybase. In the same week, the firms launched very similar plans for an application server architecture that includes tight integration with their respective individual tool offerings.
Sybase is combining its dynamic HTML page-generation product, PowerDynamo, with its Jaguar Component Transaction Server (CTS) to shape an Enterprise Application Server (EAS) offering that is due later this quarter. EAS allows for the progress of both transaction and page-centric applications under a single server. Milestone number one for the product will subsist the release of Jaguar CTS 2.0 with support for the Corba 2.2 standard, as well as the accompanying IIOP protocol.
According to Sybase, its application server will subsist tightly integrated with its flagship PowerBuilder and PowerJ products. With the imminent release of the Enterprise Application Studio, total three products will subsist packaged together along with application management tools to give users a complete solution for deploying applications. The Sybase road map, code-named Vineyard, features access for data residing anywhere in the enterprise and provides a single point of control for developing, deploying and debugging distributed components in a single environment.
"We will support total databases, and total expostulate and component models," said Sybase co-CEO Mitchell Kertzman at the firm's annual Powersoft User Conference in Los Angeles. "We integrate total the technologies [so developers] can spend them as arrogate to deliver value to the customer."
Inprise's announced application server strategy follows a similar theme: tight integration with the company's own tools, support for multiple component types and, ultimately, a single environment for building, debugging and managing distributed applications. Inprise, which acquired middleware expostulate request broker (ORB) vendor Visigenic late last year, is finally seeing the fruits of its purchase with the planned release of Internet Transaction Server, which will ultimately become portion of the company's application server offering.
Beginning with its JBuilder progress tool, Inprise will closely tie its tool lines into its architecture. "If you peer at total of their tools, they address cross-pollination," said Joe Nicholson, director of enterprise tools at Inprise. "As they fade forward, we'll assume the best parts of [individual] products and migrate them to others."
Both firms are looking to leverage desktop clients, as well as Web-based users, with support for total client types -- thin and thick.
Current Sybase users are looking forward to the newfangled application server strategy. Kent Coffel, a senior programmer analyst at St. Louis-based Maritz Inc.'s travel division, said he is currently using Sybase's PowerDynamo product but hopes to quickly evaluate the newfangled application server. Maritz builds travel Web sites for hundreds of trade shows in short periods of time. Coffel said PowerDynamo is limited in that it can only spend simple components dote stored procedures. "Logic beyond stored procedures is difficult to glean to," Coffel explained.
Open source software is gradually making ground in the enterprise market, with Linux leading the way to the hearts & minds of corporate IT managers. But can Linux really scale to the needs of spacious business, or is it doomed to remain the preserve of web-servers and software fans?
Linux, every computer geek’s favorite operating system, continues to fade from strength to strength.
Major hardware vendors are shipping more and more products that support Linux; the ranks of the open source community hold been swollen by the GNOME project; Linux deployments in universities and other educational facilities continue to turn out newfangled developments and engineers with Linux skills.
There are an estimated 34 million Linux users worldwide, with one third of total web-hosting servers, supporting one half of total the websites in the world running on Linux. Projects for the Arabisation of the code promises to retain Middle East developers on an equal footing with the repose of the world soon.
But for total the talk, Linux still seems to subsist lacking popularity in one key arena — the enterprise — and failure to crash into the spacious time could weigh in the OS becoming nothing more than a diversion for computer scientists.
Compaq warned as much at the start of October, when Judy Chavis, Linux/Unix product marketing manager for Compaq announced that the company would spend Linux for Internet infrastructure services for a worldwide e-commerce site it has planned.
“We’re definitely at the stage where they need reference sites, otherwise we’ll subsist in danger of losing total this momentum and it [Linux] becomes one of those ‘just for geeks’ things,” she said.
It is not an uncommon sentiment — Linux has been around for quite a few years now, and despite the obvious attractions of a free operating system, it still cannot appear to shake off the image of bedroom programmers poring over lines of code.
Business users hold adopted Linux for some operations, but outside of web, print, file and email servers, and developer workstations the system is apparently overlooked. Many companies are still reluctant to deploy Linux, especially for e-business applications, despite the efforts of hardware vendors to shove the system into the corporate market.
Dell and IBM hold been the most visible in promoting Linux to the enterprise. In June, Dell chose Linux as its third global strategic operating system that it factory installs and supports.
The deployment was accompanied by the launch of the One Source Alliance, a venture between Dell and Red Hat, one of the premier Linux distributions. Dell says that supplying Linux fits with its built-to-order business model to give customers what they want.
Tejas Vakil, vice president of enterprise business for Dell EMEA, explained: “The One Source Alliance reinforces Dell as an early leader in today’s huge market for Linux-based web servers and appliances, and provides a strategic advantage in how Dell builds, deploys and services global Linux solutions. Linux is their Unix offering and we’re working together with Red Hat to capitalise on the enormous break for the Internet infrastructure build-up.”
Dell recently shipped the latest version of Red Hat Linux, version 7, pre-installed on its PowerEdge servers and Precision workstations. The OS is also available on total Dell hardware, down to notebook computers. Users receive technical support from Red Hat, for a limited period.
Vakil says the offering, including the availability of an unlimited support contract for the EMEA makes a Red Hat 7 a faultless selection for customers growing or edifice e-businesses, and addresses one of the biggest problems with Linux — support.
The focus of the One Source Alliance is also spreading. When Dell began considering Linux in the middle of last year, its usefulness for web servers, running Apache Web Server software, was already gaining ground, and Linux solutions for print, file and e-mail servers were readily available.
Applications were not so common however. “Linux still lacks the extensive selection of application programs offered for Windows platforms,” David Pasley, senior software technologist for Dell wrote in July 1999.
The situation is changing though. “As portion of the One Source Alliance, Dell is working with Red Hat on tall availability Linux, storage region network support, OpenManage support and SAP porting — Dell is the lead hardware confederate for SAP with Red Hat on IA 64.” said Gareth Williams, region manager for Dell Gulf region.
“Dell also commissioned TCS to build a software test harness for industrial strength software testing — this code has now been released to open source.”
Analysts survey this support from the vendors as going some way to spreading the word about Linux. Dan Kusnetzky, vice president of system software at IDC, reports that Oracle, SAP, Sybase, Informix and many others are now offering applications, databases and progress tools for Linux.
About 23% of North American and Western European organisations report at least one Linux-based system, with 80% indicating they are open to purchasing more. But the gradual uptake of Linux in the West seems to hold been something of a inaudible revolution, rather than being driven by the spacious vendors.
Kusnetzky says that Linux has got into many organisations through the back door. “Linux has been installed inside of organisations for quite some time,” he said. “For the most part, however, this usage is hidden because Linux was not one of the approved choices for clients or server operating environments.
"Knowledgeable users brought it in to solve specific problems, and didn’t let the IT organisation know. Now that Compaq, Dell, IBM, HP and others hold stated that Linux is one of their strategic platforms, many of these previously hidden Linux systems are becoming more well known.”
So will the Middle East ensue the West in this inaudible revolution? It seems to hold started already, although the enterprise is still lagging. Gareth Williams admits that the Middle East is some way behind the US in Linux adoption.
“Typically the US market is ahead in terms of uptake of newfangled technologies,” he commented. “Dell has seen a steep increase in the uptake of Linux products in the US, hence the decision to add Linux as a factory-installed operating system. Dell is now starting to survey a growing exact for Linux products in the Middle East.”
IBM, another proponent of Linux, does not survey the same exact in the region. “We hold DB2, Websphere and MQ Series for Linux,” said Tarek Niazi, software marketing manager for IBM Middle East. “They are available [here] but I am not sure that any orders hold been placed for them.”
Dr Saud Ahmed Al Semari, director of the centre for communications and computer research at King Fadh University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM) in Saudi Arabia, reports the same situation.
“Currently Linux is limited to universities and ISPs [in the KSA]. The business sector is still linked with Microsoft NT, but that is the case even if you fade to other countries dote the US. There is a huge investment now in Linux for commercial applications, probably in five years or so you will survey a spacious change in that picture. Personal users, especially those who are affiliated with computer science, are shifting towards Linux.”
There are a number of ISPs in the Kingdom that spend Linux, but most are reluctant to admit it. It seems, as was the case in the US, that there is a taboo about using open source software.
“The commercial deployment of Linux has been there much earlier than they knew,” said Dr Khaled Al Ghoneim of King Saud University, and head of the Linux user group in Saudi Arabia.
“The companies were hesitant to promulgate it. Cisco had Linux as its print server for nearly three years. But companies assume a low profile in adopting Linux — that is the case here also. They don’t want to peer dote they are adopting a cheap solution in terms of monetary value.”
However, Dr Ghoneim said that the technical superiority of Linux, and the growth of open source software should compose a difference. “As soon as people realise that it is very gracious technically, I am sure they will adopt it.
Also, now Solaris is released as open source, companies will understand the value of open source software and the taboo about using Linux will disappear slowly as it did in the US.”
He also sees another reason why Linux deployment is likely to gain the enterprise in the Middle East — expertise. With so many Linux projects and so many power users switching to Linux, he expects to survey companies poignant to harness that Linux/Unix expertise in a few years.
“Many ISPs and other companies in the West switched to Linux mainly because the fresh graduates who came to work for them were very experienced in Linux. It is cheaper for companies to switch to Linux/Unix than to train them on NT or whatever. The college [King Saud Univeristy] has been using Linux for about four years and in a couple of years they will survey that result in industry here.”
The expert-driven approach to Linux deployment may not subsist in the best interests of businesses, however. Philip Dawson, senior research analyst in infrastructure services with the Meta Group warned:
“There are a lot of hidden costs with Linux. A lot of people are de-risking the spend of Linux by using a Linux guru who supports and develops the product they are running their businesses on — but what happens if your guru leaves?
"The bespoke skill set goes with him — not necessarily the Linux knowledge, you can glean that from another support person, but if the guru has tailored your applications, and tweaked them, then that is where they survey issues.”
Dawson is also not convinced about the scalability of Linux. Much has been made of the potential for Linux to provide cheap, powerful computing. Dr Abdulaziz Almulhem, lieutenant professor in the department of computer engineering at KFUPM said: “There are some companies that are providing Linux workstations that can give you up to 90 gigaflops, a tremendous amount of computational power for about $10,000. The graphics for the film Titanic were rendered using 160 433 MHz Alpha PCs running on Linux over a 100M/bits/s Ethernet.
"Linux has the cluster computing advantage — instead of throwing away ragged 486s you can connect them through a Gigabit Ethernet using Beowulf to give you PC recycling and cheap computing.”
The problem is that while Linux can handle horizontal scaling across a large number of single-processor machines, scaling to a vertical environment with multi-processor machines is not so straightforward.
“Clustering is fine for availability, but generally, management of the cluster if you hold got multiple nodes is extremely difficult,” said Dawson. “[Management] may subsist facile to result in a technical environment, but if you are managing a cluster in a data centre or financial services or whatever business spend then that is a different area.
"If you’ve got to hold five minutes outage a year the issues are completely different to doing technical clustering for scalability of a scientific calculation in an academic environment. I don’t assume single node scalability has been addressed.”
Dan Kusnetzky argues that typical deployment of Linux, with separate applications or components based on different machines in a web farm means that the current limitations in single machine scaling are not significant. Linux is currently capable of scaling to four or eight node processors, but whether further scaling is feasible remains to subsist seen.
However, Dawson has other concerns for the enterprise future of Linux. “Porting an application [to Linux] is one thing but integrating it and running it is another,” he said.
“Porting isn’t that difficult, but it is different porting to a platform to developing natively on a platform. To stagger to the application server where you are actually running applications that are integrated into the data centre, rather than standalone or departmental applications, then management of the integration is key.
Linux has yet to prove that it can handle a complex, integrated environment, Dawson believes.
“A web server requires one or two processor scalability and maturity of the load balancing, with the integration done by the web software — Linux is a gracious operating system for that,” Dawson explained. “But if you are talking about a four-processor ERP application server talking to a large Oracle DB2 database, then I can’t survey either of those two platforms being easily managed by Linux in the short term.
"Potentially, in three years time, the application server might [be able to handle it] but then that is subject to integration with the management framework, with deployment of a SAN and the sheer fact that the operating system has to scale to a four-way node.”
Dawson is also concerned that commercial progress of Linux could ultimately spell its open source downfall. “I assume the problem with Linux will be, is that people are birth to package in a service ingredient and a product ingredient for different components of Linux.
"There is Linux for clustering, people are doing things for systems management, things for dealing with scalability issues, if improvements are made to the standard Linux and it is packaged differently, then it starts fragmenting the source stream. If it starts forking into different products, what result people result with the different versions of Linux?
"I am concerned that it limits them in deploying different versions of Linux — it is similar to what they saw with the Unix industry 10-15 years ago, and that helped give Microsoft a leg up.”
