The repercussion of Microsoft on the Enterprise traffic Intelligence Market | killexams.com true questions and Pass4sure dumps

Although outdo is still the No. 1 traffic intelligence (BI) tool preferred by traffic users, Microsoft is not always viewed as a leading traffic intelligence player in enterprise computing. This perception enables Microsoft’s competitors to quickly can its traffic intelligence products as only suitable for small and medium businesses (SMBs) and departmental computing. The fresh release of SQL Server, its ongoing working relationship with SAP, and products devotion the recently announced Maestro analytics tool could, however, change this perspective.

Although the Windows platform is still Microsoft’s bread and butter, the company has a wide attain of products for both traffic intelligence and traffic integration. It’s an spirited exercise to piece these various products together to accept a feel for what Microsoft has to offer, and this is the objective of this month’s newsletter.

The pieces of the IT software technology stack they are interested in can be broken down into three main components: application progress and integration, traffic intelligence and data warehousing, and erudition management.

The cornerstone of Microsoft’s application progress and integration platform is of course the Windows operating system. Key developments here are support for 64-bit processors (which will boost performance), and the fresh version of the operating system known as Longhorn. The press has been closely tracking Longhorn for some time, and so I will not fade into details here. Suffice to say, devotion many fresh Window’s releases, Longhorn’s ship date keeps touching out. The requisite to help Window’s security seems to be a major factor in the delay.

Visual Studio is Microsoft’s centerpiece for application development, and as you will discern when I talk about SQL Server 2005, it is now furthermore the main progress tool for both database and traffic intelligence application development. For traffic integration, the key product is Microsoft BizTalk server, which was upgraded last year. This product can be integrated with SQL Server to track BizTalk applications and processes, and yield traffic performance management dashboards. These dashboards are developed using Analysis Services and Excel.

In the traffic integration area, it is principal to note Microsoft’s work with SAP on the Mendocino project. The product will, to quote the press release, enable “information workers to utilize extended application menus and select process options and information in the SAP-specific smart panel, synchronize information between Microsoft Exchange Server and SAP, retrieve SAP information in Microsoft outdo and submit data via Microsoft Office InfoPath forms.” This project, coupled with the joint Microsoft/SAP Maestro traffic intelligence project, which I will discuss in a moment, clearly shows that SAP and Microsoft are working together to provide solutions that can compete effectively against vendors such as Oracle.

For data warehousing and traffic intelligence, the product they requisite to behold at is SQL Server. It’s improbable to contemplate it’s been five years since Microsoft released a fresh version of SQL Server, and its competitors own been quick to point this out. It is only unprejudiced to note, however, that some principal features own been added to the product during this period; two principal ones being Notification Services and Reporting Services.

SQL Server 2005 was due to be shipped mid-year, but this has now been delayed until the finish of 2005. If Microsoft doesn’t meet this date, then I guess the product will own to be renamed SQL Server 2006! The company will deliver a third beta release of SQL Server 2005 during the summer. One principal feature in this beta will be an interactive report builder. This feature is based on technology acquired from ActiveViews. The report builder is designed for traffic users, and offers a much easier interface than Reporting Services, which uses a Visual Studio paradigm for report development.

The Microsoft website contains extensive information about SQL Server 2005 and I won’t fade into a minute discussion about its fresh capabilities here. In summary, besides database technology enhancements (like database mirroring, on-line restore, expeditiously recovery, on-line indexing and snapshot isolation) that yield the product more competitive against IBM DB2 and Oracle, the principal fresh features to note are:

  • An integrated tool for database administration (SQL Server Management Studio) and development—supports SQL, XML, MDX and XML/A.
  • Native XML data and XQuery support.
  • Notification Services—enables notifications (about database or webpage changes, for example) to be sent SMS, e-mail, instant messaging and .NET subscribers.
  • SQL Service Broker for sending/receiving messages from a database queue.
  • A completely rewritten ETL tool. The archaic DTS designation has gone, and this feature is now called Integration Services.
  •  An integrated tool for traffic quick-witted progress (Business Intelligence Studio)—supports Integration Services, Analysis Services and Reporting Services
  • Analysis Services improvements—new data mining algorithms, MDX stored procedures, served-based analytics and calculations, KPI builder, parallel processing, unified data model for multi-dimensional design, right-time traffic intelligence, proactive caching, etc.
  • Improved integration with Microsoft Office and SharePoint
  • The large number of features coupled with their tight integration into the overall Microsoft environment demonstrates why this fresh release has taken so long to approach to the market.

Just as I was completing this article, Microsoft and SAP jointly announced a fresh traffic intelligence product code named Maestro. Information about this product is sketchy, but it appears to be a much-improved version of Microsoft’s traffic Scorecard Solutions Accelerator, which currently is free. Maestro is a server-based traffic performance management scorecard application. It helps organizations build, manage and exercise scorecards and key performance indicators (KPIs). It combines this functionality with reports, charting, graphs and analysis tools as access to unstructured data. One key aspect of the product is its faculty to monitor the traffic performance of back-end systems using ODBC, web services or an SAP .NET connector. The product provides APIs that enable their capabilities to be accessed and enhanced by ISVs and system integrators. Panaroma Software has already announced its intent to support Maestro. This product is yet another instance of the blossoming relationship between Microsoft and SAP.

The last piece in the product bewilder is erudition management. One of the main Microsoft offerings here is the SharePoint Portal. This portal comes in two flavors: Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) and the SharePoint Server (SPS).  WSS is integrated and shipped with Windows Server 2003 and Office. It is intended as a collaboration and information sharing tool for workgroups and project teams. SPS, on the other hand, is used for managing multiple WSS workgroups, and adds features devotion personalization, search, content management and application integration. In its first release, SPS had limited scalability, but the fresh release shipped last year moved the architecture onto a SQL Server footing, and this has improved scalability.

There is no question that SharePoint is gaining market share, and this can only accelerate as more firms slip to Windows Server 2003, start using WSS, and find they requisite SPS to manage the environment. At the recent DCI portal conference in Phoenix, over two-thirds of the several hundred organizations in the audience indicated they were using, or intended to use, SharePoint. One reason was cost, but another key factor was the penetration of Microsoft Office in their organizations. The exercise of SharePoint technology in Microsoft’s Commerce Server and in its Axapta, august Plains and Navision traffic solutions offerings will add to the momentum of SharePoint.

Many companies own added support for Microsoft SharePoint to their product solutions. One spirited company here is Captaris, whose Teamplate and Workflow products provide SharePoint users with the faculty to build, deploy and trigger workflows from within the SharePoint environment.

One issue for Microsoft with SharePoint is they own a separate product (Content Management Server, or CMS) for web content management. Although there is some level of integration between CMS and SharePoint, the being of the two overlapping products confuses the marketplace. There are indications from Microsoft that they intend to combine these two products.

So what does outright this mean? The brief overview above clearly shows that with the shipment of SQL Server 2005, products devotion Maestro, and SQL Server’s tight integration into the overall Windows platform that Microsoft has a compelling offering, and is very enthusiastic to compete in the traffic intelligence space. There is no question that this integrated product set will be very attractive to the SMB marketplace. However, it is furthermore of profit to the enterprise marketplace, not only because of the weight of Office and outdo in these organizations, but furthermore because companies are spending currently millions of dollars on traffic intelligence software that their IT staff find complicated to install and integrate, and their LOB users find too difficult to use. The tight integration and expense of Microsoft’s products are, therefore, attractive to these enterprises.

So far, the response from traffic intelligence vendors to Microsoft’s fresh offerings and announcements has either been muted or dismissive. The only vendors to react are database vendors devotion IBM and Oracle who own modified their pricing. For a server-based pricing model, for example, Oracle is now offering Oracle Standard Edition One for $4,995 per processor, while IBM is offering DB2 UDB Express for $3,899 per processor. The equivalent SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition is $3,899 per processor. (Note that these companies furthermore offer per user pricing models.)

For traffic intelligence users, however, this server expense comparison is not very useful, since these low-end product editions own limited or no traffic intelligence or data warehousing capabilities. When you seize traffic intelligence into account the picture changes.

If I behold at published list prices for a server-based pricing model, the cost of SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition is $6,000 per processor, while Enterprise Edition is $25,000 per processor. The Standard Edition comes with a inescapable amount of support for ETL, OLAP and reporting, while the Enterprise Edition has full BI/DW capabilities. If they compare this with the Oracle expense list on their website, the cost per processor of adding Oracle traffic intelligence is $20,000, adding OLAP is $20,000 and adding data mining is $20,000. This combination furthermore requires Oracle Enterprise Edition at $40,000 per processor. The total is $100,000 per processor, compared with $25,000 for SQL Server. Now of course, pricing models are complicated and there are other ways of pricing these options, and you should check things out for yourself. Total cost of ownership and product functionality are furthermore major factors. However, even given this uneven comparison, you can discern the cost benefits Microsoft has to offer.

It remains to be seen if the fresh Microsoft products can live up to expectations and whether they can augment their penetration into large enterprises. If not, SMBs depict 80 percent of the US GNP, and IDC estimates that these firms will spend $360 billion in IT in 2005. This is a large market potential for Microsoft, whose sales and marketing model fits very well into this space. Because of its potential, companies devotion IBM, Oracle and SAP are putting more focus on the SMB marketplace, but Microsoft will be difficult to dislodge. The challenge for Microsoft at present is not the competition, but getting products out of the door.

What is traffic Intelligence? | killexams.com true questions and Pass4sure dumps

Business Intelligence (BI) systems are used to help an enterprise's determination making by combining tools for gathering, storing, accessing, and analyzing traffic data. While traditional features for querying, reporting, and analytics own long been the core focus of these tools, BI has evolved in recent years to become comprehensive, enterprise-wide platforms, and newer trends, such as self-service BI, own helped to continue interest in this technology.

BI is a combination of the tools and systems involved in an enterprise's strategic planning that aid in its analysis.

These solutions provide a single source through which to anatomize a company's disparate data sources, permitting users to execute queries without the assistance of technical staff. Over the past several years, they own evolved from narrowly focused query and reporting tools to enterprise-wide platforms. The resulting single source offers not only current, but furthermore historical and predictive views of operations.

Sometimes referred to as decision-support software, BI applications anatomize patterns in sales, trends, pricing, and customer conduct to assist in the traffic decision-making process. The expanded exercise of data warehouses, e-commerce tools, CRM packages, and other enterprise software has created a proportional requisite to easily view and exercise the information stored within these systems.

The continued evolution of this software genre encompasses fresh trends, including self-service techniques, and ongoing acquisitions that depict a major market consolidation. The major players in the sector attain from a dwindling supply of pure-play vendors to enterprise software suppliers that embrace IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, and SAP.

     Market Dynamics

While applicable to organizations of any size, traffic intelligence solutions are most relevant to industries with large numbers of customers, high levels of competition (with the resultant requisite for differentiation), and large volumes of data. Common traffic intelligence functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Analyzing sales trends.
  • Tracking customer buying habits.
  • Managing finances.
  • Evaluating sales and marketing campaign effectiveness.
  • Predicting market demand.
  • Analyzing vendor relationships.
  • Assessing staffing needs and performance.
  • Non-traditional market segments are furthermore driving the requisite for enterprise-wide, cross-application traffic intelligence solutions. The healthcare industry in particular is a key locality of focus for software developers. Rather than tracking customer buying habits and other factors that are piece of traffic intelligence for the corporate world, products used within the healthcare sector anatomize data on drug studies, enable data on patients to be exchanged in accord with HIPAA privacy regulations, and let patients schedule procedures through self-service modules built into the software. Functions that are not industry-specific, such as managing finances, are performed as well.

Within government agencies, traffic intelligence software tracks tax revenues and monitors the delivery of public services. For instance, Information Builders reports that NASA's Shuttle traffic Office uses the company's solutions to oversee its relationships with the third-party contractors it employs.

Prospective users of traffic intelligence solutions today pomp a preference for suites that address outright traffic intelligence functions across an organization. Solution providers own responded to this trend by further developing their own software and by executing mergers with one-time rivals.

The significant efforts that leading software companies are making to expand their traffic intelligence lines, both organically through in-house progress and "artificially" through acquisitions, suggests that they discern strong claim for the technology. The outcome of these changes is taking shape as a market dominated by companies with complete traffic intelligence suites. Developers that specialize in a narrow sub-category, such as reporting tools, will likely find themselves squeezed out of many sales opportunities or will be acquired by larger players that are looking to broaden their own suites.

Growth of the traffic intelligence market has slowed moderately from previous years, but it continues nonetheless. Estimates of its size vary widely, with some sources placing the size of the BI market at about $10 billion. Analyst firm Gartner forecasts that the market will grow, in spite of the current economic conditions; however, the growth is expected to be only in single digits, with a compound annual growth rate through 2013 of 6.3 percent.

     Market Leaders

As with other aspects of the technology industry, the traffic intelligence market has long been segmented into two major parts: standalone solutions and products that are piece of larger, enterprise suites. However, that is changing as enterprise vendors acquire the standalone ones. In the past yoke of years, SAP acquired traffic Objects, IBM acquired Cognos, and Oracle acquired Hyperion.

    IBM Cognos

Cognos, around since the 1970s, entered the BI market in the 1990s. In late 2005, Cognos re-architected its BI product and released Cognos 8 BI. The product includes reporting, analysis, scorecarding, dashboards, traffic event management, data integration, and a strong searching feature. Cognos acquired Applix, a well known vendor of performance analytics, in October 2007.

Cognos itself then was acquired by IBM in early 2008, allowing IBM its entry into the BI market. IBM stated that the acquisition took plot in order to "accelerate its ‘Information on Demand' strategy." Now known as IBM Cognos 8, the product line has seen additions and updates to it since its acquisition. For example, Cognos was updated to embrace a self-serve flash-based dashboard and fresh mobile and search capabilities, as well as compatibility with devices including BlackBerry, Symbian, and Windows Mobile. Cognos Express, introduced in September 2009, provides integrated BI and planning for midsize companies; Cognos TM1 provides complete planning, analysis, and reporting with advanced personalization and real-time response; Cognos Analytic Applications provide packaged reports and analysis; and other Cognos software applications are available for consolidation, planning, and dimension management.

    Information Builders

Information Builders' BI product is called WebFOCUS. It uses Ajax technology, which combines asynchronous JavaScript and XML. The latest release, WebFOCUS 8, was introduced in April 2010. It fully integrates a Performance Management Framework (PMF) interface; includes a fresh BI Portal for developers to build and deploy dashboard solutions; allows users to create portable BI applications; offers an Activity Monitor for traffic activity monitoring (BAM) and the CEP Enable capability for complicated event processing; and includes two fresh advanced analytic components, Visual Discovery 8 for visual analytics and RStat 1.2 for predictive analytics. The product will be generally available in the fourth quarter of 2010.

The company offers related products, as well. IWebFOCUS FLEX Enable, released in early 2008, uses Adobe Flex technology to incorporate interactive features, such as animation, into BI dashboards, which Information Builders calls "Flashboards." The company states that the product will work with any current or future version of WebFOCUS. In October 2008 the vendor introduced WebFOCUS InfoAssist, an ad hoc reporting solution built on AJAX technology with a Microsoft Office-like user interface.

    Microsoft

Microsoft's BI product line comprises SQL Server 2008 R2 for data storage and management (encompassing data mining, data warehousing, data quality, and ad-hoc analysis); SharePoint Server 2010 for information delivery (encompassing dashboards, collaboration/search, managed reporting, visualization, and scorecards); and Excel, along with SQL Server, for query, reporting, and analysis (encompassing ad-hoc analysis, production reporting, and OLAP analysis).

Microsoft released SharePoint Server 2010 and Office 2010 on May 12, 2010; however, both products were involved in a large beta program. By the time of the products' release, 8.6 million people were already using Office 2010 and related products, and more than 1,000 partners were already building solutions for the products.

    MicroStrategy

Founded in 1989, MicroStrategy's latest BI release is MicroStrategy 9, released in March 2009. The product includes adaptive caching technology called In-memory ROLAP, which utilizes large addressable reminiscence and provides a middle-tier database that can respond directly to data requests from reports, dashboards, and OLAP analyses. Additionally, MicroStrategy 9 offers SQL generation optimizations to help performance for queries involving complicated metrics.

MicroStrategy has announced a fresh application platform called MicroStrategy Mobile. Due to be launched in July 2010, the platform is designed for the Apple's iPad and iPhone, as well as the BlackBerry mobile device. The platform will allow an organization to develop specific applications that can accelerate on those mobile devices, allowing users to access information in what MicroStrategy has billed "mobile intelligence."

    Oracle

Oracle's BI focus is based on its traffic Intelligence Suite. This product line comprises Oracle BI Suite Enterprise Edition Plus, Oracle BI Standard Edition One, and Oracle BI Oracle Publisher (formerly XML Publisher), an enterprise reporting solution for authoring, managing, and delivering highly formatted documents. The Oracle BI product line integrates the Oracle database with Fusion middleware and analytics software and furthermore includes analytics software originally from Siebel Systems, another Oracle acquisition. The product family works with both Oracle and non-Oracle environments.

Oracle took another step in the direction of BI supremacy with the acquisition in March 2007 of Hyperion System 9 BI+. This product, originally called Hyperion Essbase (derived from Extended SpreadSheet database), was developed by Arbor Software, which Hyperion acquired in 1998. Oracle has now renamed it Oracle Essbase. The product includes reporting capabilities, dashboards, and an analysis feature that furthermore can be used in Microsoft Excel. Additionally, it combines its BI functionality with pecuniary applications, making it more of a traffic Process Management (BPM) system than "just" BI.

The company includes another product in with those pertaining to BI: Oracle's Real-Time Decisions (RTD) platform combines both rules and predictive analytics, enabling real-time intelligence via a high-performance transactional server. This server automatically renders decisions within a traffic process and creates actionable intelligence from data flowing through the process in true time.

    SAP

Business Objects was acquired by SAP in a "friendly takeover" completed in 2008. At its completion, SAP announced the release of nine packages, combining solutions from both companies in various groupings that are being sold by the sales departments of both companies as well. The packages plunge into three categories: performance optimization applications, including pecuniary Performance Management (FPM) and Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC); traffic intelligence platform packages that embrace Visualization and Reporting, Enterprise Query, Reporting, and Analysis, Data Integration and Data trait Management, and Master Data Services; and packages geared to small and midsized companies, including SAP traffic All-in-One with BusinessObjects Edge Standard, Crystal Reports Server, and BusinessObjects Edge Series, which now includes integration for SAP Solutions. According to Gartner, the combination of SAP and traffic Objects formed the largest installed base in the market, with an estimated 46,000 customers.

However, even before its acquisition of traffic Objects, SAP began to expand its BI capabilities via acquisition. In February 2007 the vendor acquired Pilot Software, a privately held company specializing in strategy management software, and its flagship product, PilotWorks. SAP has integrated PilotWorks with its own applications. Additionally, the company continues to market another BI product line. SAP's traffic Intelligence software package is a component of the company's NetWeaver platform, which furthermore includes an enterprise portal, tools for integrating SAP software with barcode readers and Bluetooth devices, and data management software, as well as tools for custom application development. The traffic Intelligence component offers a full line of extraction, analysis, and reporting tools with the capability to publish information to an intranet portal or mobile device.

    SAS

The vendor's solution, called SAS Enterprise BI Server, includes both BI tools and a BI architecture. Its features embrace Web and desktop reporting interfaces, self-service query interfaces, a Web-based interface, OLAP data storage, and a suite of realistic data presentation options, and a centralized management framework. Additionally, the vendor offers a variety of specific industry solutions, including three geared for pecuniary services, two aimed at manufacturing, three intended for retail, and two for telecommunications.

In April 2007 SAS announced its Visual BI software that allows the creation of what the vendor calls "data movies" by manipulating a motion-enabled, graphical environment. The product includes a graphics library for presentations and customizable graphics generation accessible through a dashboard that displays outright content in a customizable environment. It is powered by SAS' JMP statistical discovery software. JMP, developed by SAS in-house, can dynamically link statistics with graphics on the desktop, allowing what the vendor bills as interactive data exploration.

    Market Trends Self Service

The latest trend in this technology locality is called "self-service BI." Analyst firm Forrester refers to it as "the only way to yield BI more pervasive, delivering insights into every decision-important or mundane-that drives your business. It's the key to empowering users with actionable insights while removing many mundane BI progress and maintenance tasks from IT's crushing workload."

Information Today's "Unisphere Media" concurs on the weight of this trend, stating that "organizations that yield BI tools more readily accessible to a larger number of determination makers... report faster delivery of reports and models." That is, indeed, the gist of self service: it allows traffic determination makers to build their own traffic performance reports, instead of waiting, sometimes for weeks, for IT resources to deliver reports, as has been traditional in the BI world. However, organizations that yield BI tools more readily accessible to a larger number of determination makers report faster delivery of reports and models.

    Consolidation

One trend that has slowed recently, likely due to the economic turndown, is the market consolidation that happens when enterprise vendors acquire best-of-breed, smaller vendors. An instance of what is sometimes called sizable Fish-Little Fish, whereby large companies gobble up smaller ones, only to be gobbled up themselves by even larger companies, began in late 2007 when Cognos acquired performance analytics firm Applix, and then was itself acquired by IBM several months later. IBM isn't alone; many of the major enterprise vendors own been sedulous acquiring smaller ones to augment their BI portfolio. Microsoft, Oracle, and SAP outright own acquired former best-of-breed BI vendors as well.

The trend to acquisitions is not a fresh one. It can be traced back over the years, but one of the first of major weight was when traffic Objects acquired Crystal Decisions, a specialist in reporting tools, in December 2003. Likewise, Hyperion acquired Brio to integrate the latter's reporting technology software into its own product suite. Other activity of note included traffic Objects' acquisition of Firstlogic and Hyperion's acquisition of Upstream Software. Many acquisitions occurred in 2006: Oracle acquired Siebel Systems, best known for its customer relationship management (CRM) products; Microsoft acquired ProClarity; and traffic Objects acquired Firstlogic, Inc., a provider of enterprise data trait software, and Nsite, a "software-as-a-service" (SaaS) provider.

In 2007 the previously mentioned Cognos and Applix acquisition happened, SAP acquired Pilot Software, and Oracle continued its buying frenzy by acquiring a major BI vendor, Hyperion Solutions. In 2008 SAP acquired traffic Objects, IBM acquired Cognos, and Microsoft acquired expeditiously Search & Transfer ASA and DATAllegro.

    Software as a Service

Often referred to by the acronym "SaaS," this software application delivery model was previously called "hosting." A vendor offers an application for exercise by customers over the Internet, and charges customers for its use, precluding the requisite for them to buy a similar application. Most BI vendors-particularly those courting the mid-size market-now support some type of on-demand service. For example, traffic Objects, now an SAP company, specifically acquired a SaaS provider, Nsite, in November 2006 in order to offer a stronger on-demand service.

In 2007 Microsoft introduced its credence of "software plus services," defined as a blended model that includes desktop software, the Internet, and data and applications on servers that can be delivered as services. Microsoft's point is to ensure that its Office suite can be used as a front finish to other SaaS applications.

In spite of the trend of major vendors to offer their own SaaS solutions, interest continues in traffic intelligence and data warehousing services offered through third-party ASPs,. Hosted services are particularly attractive to small and mid-size firms, who were traditionally shut out of the traffic intelligence market, since data-analysis capabilities can be delivered without the time and cost associated with client-based implementations.

    Search Functionality

Vendors own begun adding to their BI products the faculty to search throughout corporate data sources, including pecuniary and operational reports, by anyone within an organization. Cognos, now owned by IBM, first added its own search capability, called Cognos Go! Search Service; shortly thereafter, the vendor announced an alliance with Google, where searching was made even easier via Google technology. Additionally, even before its acquisition, another alliance with IBM allowed users of Cognos Go! Search Service and those of WebSphere Information Integrator OmniFind Edition (a key component of the IBM WebSphere Content Discovery platform) to locate and anatomize information by including Cognos BI information as piece of IBM enterprise search results. In addition, Information Builders furthermore announced an quick-witted Search capability that uses its subsidiary IWay's connectivity capability to link WebFOCUS with Google's Search Appliance.

Microsoft joined in on the credence in the weight of enterprise searching capabilities. In 2008 Microsoft acquired expeditiously Search & Transfer ASA, a provider of enterprise search solutions. The company, which now operates as a Microsoft subsidiary, refers to the solution as "business intelligence built on search (BIBOS)."

    Dashboards

Dashboards, which own fallen in and out of favor several times in the information technology world over the past 15 years or so, are another trend to repercussion the BI market. These snapshots of data, resplendent with graphs, charts, and gauges, own changed since the days when they were intended for executive exercise only and the information they presented was static. Now they are quickly created, with no programming expertise necessary. Data is updated in true time, delivered to workers throughout the enterprise who can then drill down and anatomize metrics as needed. Furthermore, today's dashboards are laden with drag-and-drop personalization features that assure pertinence to anyone's role. Virtually outright of the standalone BI vendors offer some dashboard capabilities as piece of their product suites, and an entire industry of add-on dashboard software products has sprung up as well.

    Business Activity Monitoring

Similar in some respects to dashboards because it furthermore captures data and process events, traffic Activity Monitoring (BAM) allows the real-time monitoring of traffic processes. It compares and combines them into traffic metrics. Then it displays the real-time status of those metrics. An enterprise solution primarily intended for exercise by operations managers and upper management. BAM is being integrated into many of the top BI packages.

    Mobile Access

Some companies are building wireless access and alerting into their products in order to allow the growing numbers of mobile workers to sustain abreast of critical traffic issues from their handheld devices. BusinessObjects Mobile, for example, allows viewing and manipulating reports from BusinessObjects XI via mobile devices such as Blackberry or Windows Mobile. Cognos Go! Mobile offers wireless access to Cognos BI data via a mobile client. SAP's offering includes the capability to publish information to an intranet portal or mobile device. And Microsoft is touting mobile device support to its BI products by third parties.

    Enterprise Information Portals

Increasingly, information from disparate and disconnected systems is being accumulated and presented through enterprise portals, which are accessible via ordinary desktop browsers. A portal can provide determination makers with a real-time, customized view of the business, thereby providing the faculty to manage key processes. Delivery over a Web interface improves ease-of-use, which is a significant determination criterion for organizations that are evaluating traffic intelligence solutions.

    Strategic Planning Implications

In many cases, organizations considering the implementation of a traffic intelligence solution will already own in plot a traffic intelligence platform, such as an Oracle database. Adding traffic intelligence capabilities to an existing platform could significantly minimize learning curves, implementation difficulties, and costs. The alternative would be to patch-on a third-party product.

Enterprise-wide solutions from database vendors are not the best option in outright situations, however, and other considerations weigh in favor of the best-of-breed approach. For example, BI vendors are looking to expand into smaller and mid-sized businesses (SMB); for this segment, a standalone BI product, rather than an enterprise solution, is probably a smarter choice.

In theory, a traffic intelligence tool with complicated analytic and reporting tools offers the most value to an organization; in practice, however, an application with a narrowly defined set of functions may prove the most beneficial. traffic intelligence tools can be narrowly defined by focusing on only one locality of decision-making, such as product development, or by being delivered to a limited group of users as opposed to an entire organization. Although the prevailing trend is toward solutions that provide access to traffic intelligence information across an entire enterprise, to executive and end-users alike, department-level solutions remain a viable option in many circumstances.

Business intelligence solutions aim to reduce the confusion produced by maintaining data in disparate systems across multiple departments. Often the tools only add to the confusion, however, creating an additional layer of complexity for users. As a result, solution providers are spending significant progress resources to ensure that their tools can deliver effective printed reports and can integrate well with common applications such as Microsoft Excel. Ultimately, the primary consideration in selecting a traffic intelligence solution is whether it will provide information that is useful in making strategic decisions; information will be useful only to the extent that it can be easily and quickly accessed.

Redmond's living Dead: Microsoft's 8 Most celebrated 'Zombie Products'

These products aren't really alive, but they're not quite extinct, either. They're the walking deceased of Microsoft product lines, and it's best to avoid them -- if you can.

  • By John K. Waters
  • 08/01/2010
  • Every day in Redmond is the night of the living dead. While vibrant, well-supported, celebrated offerings from the company live happily on the Microsoft campus, the ranks of their undead counterparts are swelling outright the time.

The undead are Microsoft zombie products: Offerings that Microsoft has tried to execute but that haven't yet settled in the software graveyard. Their production days are over, and their support days are either limited or finished. Yet they live on in IT departments, sometimes serving critical purposes and requiring maintenance that becomes harder and harder to provide as their life compel from Redmond drains away.

Sometimes, when Microsoft kills a product, it does so in spectacular vogue -- the Kin phones and Windows XP SP2 are examples of that. Sometimes, though, Microsoft kills one of its offerings softly, burying the plot to exterminate it in an FAQ document or a statement stashed away on its Web site. IT professionals, beware these eight products that might behold alive but are, in fact, pretty much deceased -- at least from the Microsoft perspective.

Microsoft Office Small traffic AccountingThis undead app was spawned back in 2005 to tap into the lucrative small traffic accounting market, so ably dominated by Intuit with its ubiquitous QuickBooks. A year later, it was renamed Microsoft Office Accounting (MOA) and offered in a free Express Edition and a paid Professional Edition.

MOA provided a small traffic accounting application with what seemed at the time to be a hard-to-beat advantage: integration with apps in the Office suite. The MOA package furthermore came with numerous "strategically informative ways to exercise and understand pecuniary data": everything from forecasting tools to more than 60 customizable lists and reports -- a fairly innovative attempt to accept traffic intelligence (BI) into a packaged accounting application.

And yet, despite a splashy debut, subsequent discounts and a mail-in rebate program, MOA never made much headway over the established market leaders. Intuit continued to command more than 90 percent of the market. Its closest competitor, Peachtree, owned less than 5 percent.

Microsoft officially discontinued distribution of the product on Nov. 16, 2009. In its announcement, Microsoft said: "We continually evaluate their traffic strategies to yield sure we're working to meet the needs of customers, partners and shareholders. With that in mind, we've determined that existing free templates within Office used with outdo are a better option for small businesses."

Microsoft might own killed it, but MOA still walks the earth. The company has promised to continue providing support for the software for five years. And you can still find fresh copies of even the 2006 edition for sale on the Web.

Microsoft MoneyPreceding MOA into the grave was Redmond's personal finance software package, Microsoft Money. It was first released as piece of the Microsoft Home product family in the early 1990s, and quickly emerged as a worthy competitor to Intuit Quicken and other desktop financial-management apps.

Microsoft Money attracted a respectable user base over the years, but never neared the market-leading position of Intuit, which the company actually sought to buy in the mid-1990s. In August 2008, Microsoft informed its customers that it would stop releasing incremental updates of the product annually; there would be no 2009 version. A year later, the company officially pulled the plug on progress of the product.

Explaining its decision, Microsoft said on its "Money Plus" Web site: "The category of personal financial-management software has changed considerably in the 17 years since Money was first established. As more users shift their attention to full-service offerings provided by banks and brokerages, claim for a comprehensive personal finance toolset has declined."

Among those changes was the advent of free, Internet-based competitors, including Mint.com and the Intuit Quicken Online program, which took the desktop finance software market into territory where Microsoft doesn't own the surest footing.

Moreover, the death of Microsoft Money was seen by industry watchers as piece of an overall cost-cutting effort, announced in early 2009, which included a manner to lay off as many as 5,000 employees. A Microsoft spokesperson said at the time that the company was "planning for economic uncertainty."

Microsoft has promised to support the still-animated corpse of Money through January 2011. And several editions of Microsoft Money Plus 2008 can still be create shuffling around on online retail sites.

Response PointLaunched in March 2007 amid much fanfare, this Microsoft on-premises, Voice over IP (VoIP)-based private branch exchange (PBX) system was aimed at small businesses that couldn't afford expensive and complicated switchboard systems, but still needed that capability. The manner was to yield PBX inexpensive and accessible via the Internet, and Microsoft partnered with several phone makers to deal the product.

But Response Point was a targeted, niche play that just didn't pan out. During a June 2009 Microsoft Town Hall meeting with value added resellers, the company revealed that the product had gone into "maintenance mode," and no future releases were planned. The product is scheduled to combine the ranks of the walking deceased this year on Aug. 31, when Microsoft will discontinue it officially.

As Microsoft explained in its announcement: "Despite benign initial response from customers and channel partners since launch, they haven't seen the necessary claim materialize to sustain Response Point as a viable standalone business. To continue to support the needs of the small traffic community, they hope to consolidate their efforts and offerings in this space around Microsoft Office Communications Server."

Current Response Point customers will be able to continue using the product, as Microsoft says, "per their gear manufacturer purchase agreement." And Redmond promises to continue to support its partners and current customers via a special Web site, until Nov. 1, 2011.

PerformancePoint ServerOn June 6, 2006, Microsoft unveiled a fresh traffic process management product that pulled together several existing products, including its traffic Scorecard Manager, components from its Dynamics product line, and the newly acquired analytics tools from ProClarity. Dubbed PerformancePoint Server, it provided a number of features, including dashboards, scorecards, key performance indicators, reports, filters and strategy maps, outright delivered via a monitoring server.

The product was released in September 2007, and industry watchers famous that Microsoft was entering a maturing market late -- perhaps too late to catch up with BPM offerings from IBM Corp., Oracle Corp., SAP AG and SAS Institute Inc., not to mention products from BI and enterprise resource planning vendors. But they furthermore expected Microsoft to accomplish what Microsoft does: stick with the product, refining versions until it gained market traction.

But a down economy and a customer base that, as Microsoft Put it, "needs to accomplish more with less," caused the company to execute the standalone product in April 2009, and then quickly resurrect several of its features in SharePoint 2010 as PerformancePoint Services for SharePoint. Those features included the scorecard, dashboard and analytic functionality.

"Our determination is based on wanting customers to truly undergo pervasive traffic intelligence in their organization at a low cost through the tools they exercise every day," Kurt DelBene, senior VP of the Microsoft Office traffic Platform Group, said at the time. "In today's economic climate, having the most pertinent information available, allowing you to clearly view the health of your organization, is imperative. They want to give what customers requisite in a way that makes sense for their traffic -- through the widely adopted Office SharePoint Server, the planning and analysis tool Microsoft Office Excel, and the highly scalable Microsoft SQL Server."

Windows Live OneCareIntroduced in 2006, Windows Live OneCare was the Microsoft all-in-one security package aimed at the home PC user. Offered on a subscription basis, it provided a combination of anti-virus software, a firewall, back-up and restore utilities, a tune-up utility and malware protection.

Live OneCare stirred up the market for a while, seemingly scaring the pants off competitors. (Symantec CEO John Thompson threw snarky barbs about the product's pricing.) But they shouldn't own worried: OneCare never really won a significant share of the consumer PC security market.

Microsoft announced its plans to tow the plug on Windows Live OneCare in November 2008, but didn't discontinue sales of the standalone product until on June 30, 2009. The company essentially replaced Live OneCare with Microsoft Security Essentials, a free, downloadable anti-malware program -- no back-up or tune-up utilities included.

Amy Barzdukas, senior director of product management for the Microsoft Online Services and Windows Division, said in a statement at the time: "Customers around the world own told us that they requisite comprehensive, ongoing protection from fresh and existing threats, and they seize that concern seriously. This new, no-cost offering will give us the faculty to protect an even greater number of consumers, especially in markets where the growth of fresh PC purchases is outpaced only by the growth of malware."

Microsoft has promised to continue supporting the users of this undead software through the terms of their subscriptions. But Redmond hasn't optimized the product for the Windows 7 OS or Windows XP mode in Windows 7.

Windows Essential traffic ServerMicrosoft Windows Essential traffic Server (EBS) was designed to provide an IT infrastructure for midsize businesses. The product was built from the Windows Server 2008 code base, and included three licenses of the OS plus Exchange Server 2007, System focus Essentials 2007, Forefront Security for Exchange Server and Forefront Threat Management Gateway (Medium traffic Edition). The Premium Edition added another Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition license and the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Standard database software.

Microsoft released version 2008 of the product, but would never release version 2010. The company cited requisite of demand, but furthermore a market shift within the midsize traffic segment to cloud-based management and virtualization. Windows EBS seemed to be offering a solution to a market segment that didn't requisite one.

In a March 2010 blog entry, the Windows EBS team wrote: "Since the launch of EBS, several changes own occurred that drove their determination to streamline their server product portfolio. First, midsize businesses are rapidly turning to technologies such as management, virtualization and cloud computing as a means to nick costs, help efficiency and augment competitiveness. Those capabilities are already available through other offerings, including Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft System focus and the Microsoft traffic Productivity Online Suite."

Microsoft announced it would discontinue progress of Windows EBS as of June 30, 2010, and that it would no longer be available for purchase as of July 1, 2010.

The blog went on to announce a "limited offer" for current EBS 2008 customers, who, from June 30, 2010 through Dec. 31, 2010, would be able to accept the individual component software from the EBS 2008 suite for free (plus local taxes and shipping and handling charges). The company promised that the death of Windows EBS would not "impact any other Windows Server products and solutions, including the next version of Windows Small traffic Server (SBS)."
